What will you be doing:

This entry level role requires no experience, just an interest in working with nonhuman primates in a laboratory setting.

  • Provides animals with food, water, toys etc. according to company standards, handles them solicitously when caring for them.
  • Has basic knowledge about the behavior of certain species, knows the animals of own area well, handles them in an affectionate way and gives immediate rewards.
  • Maintains, cleans and disinfects animal cages, rooms, hallways and non-animal rooms as well as feeders, water bottles if needed.
  • Provides clean waste removal and maintains a safe work environment.
  • Performs control checks at the receipt of new animals; ensures that all equipment, feed, water and the animal rooms are set up and meets company standards.
  • Monitors and documents animal condition or behavior, environmental conditions and instrument settings, reports peculiarities as well as deviations from study plan and SOPs to supervisor, study director and/or veterinarian and performs appropriate corrective actions as assigned and documents them.
  • Assists in the inventory of food, bedding, toys and other cage equipment and supplies, as well as in provision and maintenance of cages and other devices and can take responsibility for certain partial areas. Assures well organized storage within own area.
  • Collects data and maintains well documented laboratory records according to GLPs. Performs quality controls and other reviews of other animal caretakers' data and identifies errors.
  • Works across groups and species when necessary.
  • Works largely independently and on non-routine procedures as assigned.
  • Assures that own work is continued by one or several instructed deputies also in the case of sudden absence.
  • Own work is reviewed regularly for overall accuracy and completeness.
  • Performs other related duties as needed.

Sunshine Building Maintenance laboratory animal caretaker job description

Sunshine Building Services, Inc, has an opening for a full-time laboratory animal caretaker working exclusively with mice to support our contract at a research university. The candidate will serve as a contract employee working for Sunshine Building Services, Inc.

The successful candidate must be able to perform daily animal husbandry procedures such as cleaning and moving cages, feed animals, perform daily wellness checks on mice, and disinfect/sanitize cages using various detergents and washing methods. Must be able to work well as a team member, as well as independently. May perform other duties as assigned by the Facility Supervisor or Veterinarian.

This role is open to candidates who enjoy working in a hands-on position or those that are open to learning and growing in the scientific/biotech field.

*General Summary: *Responsible for providing a clean and sterilized living environment for research mice.
*Responsibilities: *
* To handle and ensure humane care of research rodents, such as properly picking up, restraining and transferring animals between cages while performing routine husbandry tasks.
* To comply with all laboratory safety requirements, including proper donning of personal protective equipment.
* To work with various rodent housing systems.
* To prepare and use disinfectants and detergents to clean and disinfect animal quarters, cages and associated equipment.
* To be trained to operate large cage wash equipment and a steam sterilizing autoclave.
* To remove husbandry-related waste in compliance with local and state regulations.
* To keep accurate room logs for daily room checks.
* To train and assist investigators and new staff members with husbandry-related tasks. For example, may mix and/or administer medications into feed and water according to specific instructions.
* To transports supplies to and from the Animal Colony
* To review inventory and stock supplies, including unloading and transport shipments of husbandry (feed/bedding) and housekeeping supplies.

* To observe and report any abnormalities in animal health, equipment, or facilities to the supervisor.
* May be asked to assist with study endpoints and animal euthanasia.
