Position Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct sample analysis, as well as light maintenance for laboratory equipment, data processing, inventories of samples, and day to day purchasing and stocking of laboratory supplies.
Assist in project development, coordination, logistics, and supply procurement.
Travel to rural coastal areas to assist in field collection of organisms, samples, and data.
Contribute to grant proposal development by drafting relevant sections; prepare and present novel research findings through oral presentations and written manuscripts for both public and professional audiences assist with report preparation and manuscript submission.
Perform general husbandry and care for onsite algae, bivalve, and fish species as needed.
Maintain accurate and organized laboratory records, logs, and documentation in accordance with regulatory and institutional standards.
Ensure adherence to safety protocol, including proper handling and disposal of chemicals and biological materials.
Attend meetings and participate in required training sessions to maintain compliance and stay updated on protocols.

The Medial Laboratory Technician is required to work three (3) scheduled days per month and be available for additional short notice call in.
Essential Functions
* Performs pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic assessment on all un'ina testing to ensure sample suitability and integrity, evaluate accuracy and precision of test results
* Demonstrates competency for all test procedures performed at Dena'ina Wellness Center (DWC) Laboratory through adherence to established policies and procedures for all laboratory testing processes
* Reviews quality control data to identify analytic discrepancies, troubleshoot and document remedial action taken when test systems deviate from established performance guidelines, resolve inconsistencies to ensure un'ina results are within allowable ranges before release from laboratory information system (LIS)
* Reports test results, identify results that are abnormal and communicate values to un'ina's provider following established laboratory documentation protocol, submit reportable infectious disease information to the State of Alaska public health department or other designated officials
* Maintains laboratory equipment and analyzers to ensure quality control measures meet CLIA regulations
* Performs assigned proficiency, competency, and continuing education within established timelines
* Trains new employees, Dena'ina Wellness Center (DWC) staff, and laboratory science students, and provide remedial training as needed
* Collaborates with Laboratory Director in preparation for laboratory inspection from regulatory agencies, such as clinical staff competency assessments and writing laboratory protocols
* Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications
Education
* An Associate's degree in Medical Technology or related field
Experience
* One (1) years' experience in a medical or public health laboratory setting or clinical rotations through required education
* Experience working with Electronic Health Records (EHR)
Preferred
* Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities
* Proficient phlebotomy skills across the life span
License/Certification
* Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP), or equivalent certification from a national recognized organization or military certification
* Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy, or obtain within 90 days of hire
* Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or able to obtain within three (3) months of hire
Special Skills
* Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, or obtain training within 90 days of hire

* Provide guidance for DWC staff with regards to the LIS, acceptable practices of laboratory medicine per CLIA regulations, limited test utilization and interpretive information with referral of advanced clinical questions to the Laboratory Director
* Ability to work independently, interact and communicate in a professional manner that promotes a harmonious and collaborative work environment, listen and respond to constructive criticism in a productive manner
* Strong oral and written communication skills, organizational skills with attention to detail
* Observe safety, infection control, and risk management policies and procedures
* Inventory management of laboratory supplies to ensure adequate levels of inventory are maintained

The Organization
This position will be located in Seward, Alaska, at the Alutiiq Pride Marine Institute (APMI), a branch of CRRC. CRRC is a nonprofit inter-Tribal fish and wildlife commission established to address environmental and natural resources issues of concern to its seven member Tribes, located in the Chugach region of southcentral Alaska. These include Chenega IRA Council, Native Village of Eyak (Cordova), Port Graham Village Council, Nanwalek IRA Council, Qutekcak Native Tribe (Seward), Tatitlek Village IRA Council, and Valdez Native Tribe.
Position Description
This position serves in the Chugach Region Ocean Monitoring (CROM) program, a specialized marine ecological and biochemical laboratory. Assays conducted in this laboratory will focus on ocean chemistry monitoring, and may include shellfish biotoxin monitoring, phytoplankton identification, and general husbandry of algae, bivalve, and fish species.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct sample analysis, as well as light maintenance for laboratory equipment, data processing, inventories of samples, and day to day purchasing and stocking of laboratory supplies.
Assist in project development, coordination, logistics, and supply procurement.
Travel to rural coastal areas to assist in field collection of organisms, samples, and data.
Contribute to grant proposal development by drafting relevant sections; prepare and present novel research findings through oral presentations and written manuscripts for both public and professional audiences' assist with report preparation and manuscript submission.
Perform general husbandry and care for onsite algae, bivalve, and fish species as needed.
Maintain accurate and organized laboratory records, logs, and documentation in accordance with regulatory and institutional standards.
Ensure adherence to safety protocol, including proper handling and disposal of chemicals and biological materials.
Attend meetings and participate in required training sessions to maintain compliance and stay updated on protocols.

Educational & Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, or a related field.
Equivalent professional experience may substitute for a degree.
Skills and Abilities
Basic knowledge of marine chemistry and ecology, particularly life history and physiology of marine fish and invertebrates.
Basic knowledge of Hazmat/OSHA policies and practices.
Experience with analytical chemistry and laboratory research, including data collection, sample processing, analysis, and reporting.
Experience with ocean acidification and/or marine sampling analysis preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent computer skills.
Ability to generate and interpret statistical, biological, and physiological data from novel sample sources, and to prepare graphical and tabular presentation of findings.
