The hiring rate is dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to education, training, work experience, terms of any applicable collective bargaining agreement, seniority, etc.
Performs laboratory testing and support services across the major areas of the laboratory. Performs moderate to high complexity laboratory procedures, as defined by CLIA, according to standard operating procedures. This testing requires the limited exercise of independent judgment and interpretation and is performed under the supervision of a medical technologist or department supervisor.
Essential Functions
* Perform phlebotomy and specimen processing as necessary.
* Follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis.
* Performs moderate complexity or waived tests, as assigned. Recognizes abnormal results and follows up as defined in standard operating procedures.
* Operates instruments as assigned. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and notifies appropriate technical personnel.
* Performs routine quality control and maintains accurate records. Recognizes out-of-control results and notifies technical personnel.
* Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results and takes appropriate action according to predetermined protocols.
* Assists in the training of new caregivers and students.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, licensure, and experience:

The Phillips Lab conducts a wide variety of research in the biology and genetics of aging and stress responses using Caenorhabditis species as a model. This includes the advancement of genetic engineering tools for high-throughput experimentation and the utilization of synthetic biology approaches.
The Institute of Ecology and Evolution (IE²) facilitates research and graduate education in ecology and evolutionary biology. Position Summary
The Phillips lab plans to make multiple hires for research positions at the appropriate rank to be responsible for supporting synthetic and molecular biology projects by generating complex transgenics using CRISPR-Cas9 technology and conducting high-throughput screens. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to: single cell/single nuclei isolation and sorting by flow cytometry (FACS), microinjections, and preparation of sequencing libraries. Work will be conducted largely independently with guidance from senior members of the synthetic biology group.
Minimum Requirements

What You'll Do:
Perform moderate and high complexity laboratory testing according to internal and external standards, requirements, and policy, including regulations established through CLIA.
Review accuracy and evaluate reliability of testing results.
According to Hospital policy, notify proper parties of critical testing results.
Respond tactfully and appropriately to evaluation that results from Laboratory Service quality control and performance improvement activity, applying conclusions of such evaluation to improve personal performance.
Properly maintain and troubleshoot equipment used to execute functions of position, and adequately document such maintenance and troubleshooting.
Maintain a clean and efficient work area through adherence to internal and external protocols and standards, including those that pertain to safe management of biohazard materials.
Monitor inventory of supplies used to execute functions of position, and properly notify designated staff when such supply requires restock.
Annually demonstrate competency in all pertinent patient testing specialties.
Perform other duties assigned by Laboratory Director or designee.

Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician II (MLT II) in their role as testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results. Each individual performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities. Under general supervision, the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT II), in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures. * Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results;
* Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples;
* Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed;
* Follow the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance;
* Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical consultant, technical supervisor, clinical consultant or director; and
* Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. 42 CFR 493.**************.

Essential Key Responsibilities:
Exercises independent judgment in dealing with procedural and technical problems.
Examines slides and/or blocks to ensure tissue preparation is meeting laboratory requirements.
Trains or directs Laboratory Assistants and Histology Technicians engaged in laboratory testing and processing techniques.
Prepares sections of human tissue for microscopic examination and patient diagnosis, using techniques to gross (dissect tissue), embed (orient specimen in paraffin block), section (cut thin sections of tissue), stain (enhance contrast of tissue and highlight specific features of interest with routine hematoxylin and eosin stains), and mount tissue (adhere tissue onto glass slides), from surgical procedures.
Performs recuts and additional stains including special and immunohistochemistry stains, as requested by a Pathologist.
Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist.
May label requisitions, specimen containers, cassettes and/or slides and affixes coverslip to slides.
Maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance and quality controls performed.
Files, retrieves, and distributes blocks, slides, and pathology reports.
Operates, cleans, and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, and workstation.
Disposes of hazardous chemical waste per regulatory guidelines.
Maintains strictest confidentiality.
Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.
Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
Bachelor's Degree in the field of Laboratory Science or equivalent under the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines of high complexity testing.
State licensure, if applicable.
Certified or eligible for Board of Certification (BOC) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
Experience:
Completion of a Histology program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or minimum of one (1) year experience as a Histology Technician Trainee and competent in the areas of embedding, microtomy, grossing, special stains, and immunohistochemistry.
Requirements:
Successful completion of a post-employment visual color discrimination test.
Successful completion of annual education units per ASCP guidelines.
Equipment:
Computers, computer programs, information system(s), scanners, forceps, rulers, tissue dyes, scalpel or razor blades, microtomes, cryostats, water baths, slide rack, tissue processors, drying ovens, automatic stainers, cover slippers, and personal protective equipment.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of CLIA regulations regarding proficiency testing, quality assurance and quality control.
Knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures, equipment, and testing to monitor control checks.
Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff.
Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Skill in using computer programs and applications.
Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests and operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
