Uses collection labels and lists to coordinate inpatient draws.
Correctly identifies patient prior to phlebotomy.
Correctly uses Typenex bands when appropriate.
Performs venipuncture or capillary puncture according to procedure.
Ensures appropriate and adequate samples are collected with minimal discomfort to the patient.
Appropriately labels samples at patient's side.
Understands appropriate site care and adverse reaction care.
Communicates to support staff pertinent patient care concerns or issues.
Utilizes pneumatic tube system for timely delivery of sample to the Core Lab (CMC site only).
Wears pager and logs location when outside of the lab.
Responds to Code Blue and traumas.
Collects home draws.
Understands priority codes and draws appropriately.
Communicates pertinent information throughout the day and at shift changes.
Performs processing job duties associated with the Core Lab.
Receives all specimens into the lab, making sure tests are ordered, verified, labeled and processed appropriately.
Distributes samples to correct testing area.
Processes, stores and completes applicable paperwork for send out tests.
Understands and utilizes the LIS interfaces for transmittal of lab orders.
Answers requests for patient reports.
Packages material for shipment through various carriers (UPS, etc.).
Inventories and maintains stock received from referral labs.
Fills supply request for outlying areas.
Acts as a resource person by answering questions concerning test requirements and handling.
Maintains a clean and organized work area.
Understands and utilizes various computer programs related to their job (Optimaxx, AS400, etc.).
Answers incoming phone calls to the Core Lab main number.
Performs various other clerical duties including but not limited to filing, faxing and photocopying as needed.
Understands general registration procedures including why and when new account numbers need to be assigned.
Hours/Schedule: Second shift rotating start times (1pm-930pm and 2pm-1030pm). Every other weekend and holiday rotation.

The Instructional Lab Assistant for the Automotive Collision Repair program plays a key role in supporting the faculty and enhancing student learning. Summary:

The Department of Pathology-Medical Center North Liberty is seeking a Medical Lab Technician to provide moderately and highly complex clinical lab testing and analysis on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease. Will use a variety of procedures that may involve numerous detailed tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment.. These positions are 100% time. Working hours will initially be M-F, 3rd shift (2230-0700 with rotating holidays and weekend potential) with primary duties to include instrument validation, SOP development and miscellaneous training activities, which could include training other technologists.
Duties to include:
* Performs quantitative and qualitative analysis for both moderately and highly complex testing on laboratory clinical and research biological specimens such as blood, tissue/organ and body fluids.
* Dispenses blood products that are compatible for the patient being transfused.
* Dispenses tissue products to the OR.
* Prepares surgical specimens and other designated specimen types for transport to MCU. Prepares packing list/bill of lading as required/necessary.
* After consultation with/direction from a Decedent Care Specialist, and in collaboration with Safety/Security staff, releases decedents from the body hold cooler when necessary.
Required Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution, or
* Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or eligible from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA), or
* Successfully completed an official US military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician) is required.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Desirable Qualifications:
* Certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is highly desirable.
* Previous experience in a laboratory performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood baking, chemistry, hematology, and/or microbiology, which may include program training experience, is highly desired.

Summary of Duties of the Medication Technician
The primary responsibilities of the Medication Technician are as follows: 1) Administer or assist with the administration and/or supervision of medications to the residents in a safe, accurate, and timely manner (dependent on State regulations); 2) Provide physical and psychosocial care to all residents in a manner that promotes dignity, choice, and individuality; and 3) Responsible for overseeing the wellness staffing schedule. Documents medications administered on the MAR in accordance with company policy; Checks MARs immediately after administration and prior to end of shift to ensure documentation is complete and accurate.
Conducts change of shift report with oncoming/outgoing shift personnel.
Maintains security of medication cart and narcotic keys during entire shift; Conducts narcotic count at the beginning and end of every shift in accordance with company policies and procedures.
Provides assistance with activities of daily living such as with bathing, dressing, personal hygiene (includes shaving, oral care, nail care, hair care, foot care), toileting, eating, and ambulation/mobility.

Responsibilities
Pre-Analytic workflows
* Greets everyone with a pleasant and professional manner, using patient experience best practice guidelines (AIDET, 5/10 Rule and No-Point, etc.)
* Identifies patients and samples using two patient identifiers, always labeling samples in the presence of the patient.
* Performs medical venous and capillary blood collections independently for patients of all ages within specified safety parameters, timelines and pace.
* Performs sample receiving, accessioning, processing, aliquoting, preparation for transport and/or delivery to testing areas.
* Utilizes supply items in a cost-effective manner, recognizing when to reorder and assisting with unpacking and/or restocking items.
* Achieves basic understanding of lab tests to answer patient questions in an easy to understand way.
Analytic workflows
* Performs CLIA waived testing on medical samples in accordance with manufacturer specifications using good laboratory practice.
* Works efficiently with the workflow and workload.
* Documents routine instrument maintenance; elevates non-routine issues to management.
Post-Analytic workflows
* Follows appropriate reporting protocols including critical value reporting.
* Monitors pending logs and work queues and resolves pending tests and registration errors.
* Prepares and logs samples for proper storage and retention.
Committed Team
* Prioritizes work in the best interest of the patient, sharing the work with team members.
* Assists with training new employees and students, being helpful and supportive in their teaching.
* Attends department huddles, staff meetings and other required training.
* Checks emails regularly for huddle minutes and important communications relevant to assignment.
Qualifications
* High School graduate or equivalent.
* Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
* Multicultural sensitivity.
* Microsoft Office - basic computer skills.
* Customer/patient focused.
* Basic knowledge of computer systems used on analyzers, Sunquest and EPIC.
* Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.
* Demonstrates knowledge of computer programs for patient identification, registration, order, and sample tracking.
* Demonstrates basic knowledge of computer programs for reporting test results.
* Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
