Job Description
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Understands all specimen requirements and can perform phlebotomy for both adult patients and pediatric patients
Always identify patients with two unique identifiers
Understands LIS and EMR systems to accession and process all lab samples, including outside orders
Transfer orders from EMR to LIS and enter appropriate information
Knows and instructs patients on proper procedure for urine/stool/sputum collection
Knows what vacutainer tubes to draw for which tests and ensures that all specimens are labeled properly
Checks send-out log to be sure all reports have been received, call performing lab if copies of report still pending
Ensures all supply levels are maintained and adequate
Orders supplies as instructed by supervisor
Performs other clinical or administrative office tasks as necessary (if applicable to site)
Prepares samples for transport and knows all specimen processing procedures
Adheres to site-specific workflows
Keeps work area clean, stocked and organized
Packages Biohazardous Waste to prepare for scheduled pick up
Understands and can perform all POCT including Quick Strep, Urine hCG, Urine Dip, Quick Flu, Occult Blood, and Urine Drug Screen
Perform and document QC when necessary
Knows and abides by personnel policies and procedures
Maintains excellent customer service with patients, staff, and physicians
Assists in training new employees as directed
Work on quality improvement initiatives with manager, as directed
Follows all OSHA and CLIA regulations as applied to InterMed
Performs and documents on OSHA Log:
Disinfect counters with 10% bleach daily
Disinfect phlebotomy chairs/area with 10% bleach daily
Check surrounding offices for samples daily
Empty Confidential Trash daily
Clean Centrifuge weekly
Disinfect large waste buckets weekly
Change sharps containers as needed
Monitor and document temperatures
As directed, consistently performs all the following tasks:
“Scanned Lab Composite” workflow daily
Scrub lab schedules to check for orders ahead of appointment times
Perform “no-show” workflow from lab schedules
Ability to work in the processing area independently and without performance concerns
Audits the POCT office logs
If applicable, assists the technologists in the following areas:
Understands and can plant all in-house cultures, including urine cultures, strep cultures (throat and vaginal)
Builds and checks Micro work lists for Urine Cultures, Strep Cultures, and Vaginal Cultures
Disassembles and cleans urinalysis analyzer daily
Orders processing supplies as needed from various vendors and companies
Processing and distributing sample to the appropriate performing departments
Performing QC on waived platforms
Processing urine samples on the automated platform and prepare for microscopic examination
Plating microbiology cultures
Capping and storing samples
Processing Urgent Care samples STAT
Any additional projects within the scope of position, as directed
JOB RESPONSIBILTIES:
Successful completion of a phlebotomy or lab assistant training course required
1 year of phlebotomy experience with all types of patients and processing preferred

Responsibilities
* Serve as Anatomy Prosector for the Anatomy Program in the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM).
* Serve as Surgical Workshop Coordinator for Continuing Medical Education courses scheduled through the Anatomy section of the COM Biomedical Sciences Department (primarily weekend workshops).
* Participate in the delivery of the Anatomy for Musculoskeletal Medicine Residency Workshop at the University of New England and Maine Medical Center.
* Assist with maintaining the Anatomical Donor Program, including fresh tissue procurement and Thiel embalming.
* Perform prosection of anatomical specimens for the body donor laboratory, photographic documentation, and workshops.
* Attend weekly anatomy discipline planning meetings.
* Operate and maintain the C-arm fluoroscope for workshop and classroom activities.

Qualifications

* Knowledge of, or experience using, Adobe programs for image management is helpful.

The Living Specimen Coordinator/Maintenance Technician is responsible for the complete care and feeding of the College's living specimens including the animal room animals, barn animals, and fresh water and marine specimens, plus coordinates the efforts of support staff as applicable. This role oversees all aspects of on-site animal husbandry and associated record keeping including animal health procedures, pickups and deliveries, rotational grazing, and general barn maintenance. The position supports student learning outcomes related to animal husbandry, and assisting with other animal, wildlife, and sustainable agriculture projects when applicable. The Living Specimen Coordinator/Maintenance Technician also assists with maintaining cleanliness, safety, orderliness, appearance and repair of campus grounds, roads, walks and buildings.
POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
Involved in all aspects of care for living collections including, but not limited to: feeding, watering, cleaning, regular animal handling for health and socialization, animal training, enrichment, preventative health care, veterinary emergencies, monitoring and record keeping, cage maintenance, tracking supplies, setting up and taking down fencing, moving animals through pastures, and general upkeep.
Schedules, trains, and supervises barn staff, work-study students and interns as available,
Assists Director of Facilities Management with budget planning and purchasing related to living specimens.
Supports the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee protocol and processes.
Responsible for covering all basic caretaking duties during breaks and other times when work-study or interning students are not available.
Facilitates class/lab use of the animal room/its occupants, including special arrangement of the room, set-up of tanks or enclosures there or elsewhere, safe transport of animals to another location, monitoring and assisting with class/student observations of animals, and occasionally speaking to groups about the animals, their care etc.
Maintains an animal collection that supports curricular needs.
Identifies remodeling, repair and construction needs of the animal room and barn.
Collaborates with additional staff for the management of facility, waste management, and on-campus food system when feasible.
Stocks and administers medical equipment and treatments.
Facilitates tours and on-campus activities involving the barn and or livestock, and animal room when necessary.

Perform blood collection procedures using a variety of techniques. Interact with patients. Process orders through information system and label specimens. Provide technical training to students. Perform equipment maintenance. Perform quality control and waived / nonwaived patient testing with a variety of automated and nonautomated methods on all shifts, sometimes without direct supervision. Process reported results through information system and maintain regulatory documentation.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Judge test order appropriateness.
Accurately transcribe provider test orders.
Process standing and verbal orders.
Obtain Advance Beneficiary Notice if required.
Positively identify patient.
Collect blood specimens in appropriate tubes using technique appropriate to age and physical state of patient.
Annual in-service on handling patient emergencies.
Instruct / direct collection of urine specimens using technique appropriate to test ordered.
Determine acceptability of specimens and rejects per policy.
Give collection requirements to patients and providers.
Process specimens.
Process referral specimens up to point of shipment.
Stock supplies within and maintain a neat and orderly work area.
Maintain inventory.
Maintain analyzers.
Perform instrument calibration and quality control.
Recognize an unexpected or out-of-control QC value and troubleshoot system before reporting patient results.
Notify supervisor of discrepant results, non-functioning equipment, and unresolved QC problems.
Perform laboratory testing in all areas.
Recognize an unexpected and/or abnormal result, correlating with patient age and sex, and troubleshoot system.
Recognize interfering substances that can affect results.
Alert provider of panic values per policy.
Process outgoing laboratory reports.
Distribute reports.
File laboratory reports.
Operate CPSI system within scope of responsibility.
Instruct and observe students in performing testing.
Orient new employees through responsible areas.
Review new policies and procedures.
Seeks to upgrade or broaden skills, maintains Lab and BLS Certifications.
Use personal protective equipment during collection and testing, including gloves.
Appropriately use BD safety needles and Point-Lok device.
Appropriately use aerosol shields and safety caps.
Immediately dispose capped needle and holder.
Appropriately use Sharps containers and red bag waste.
Observe, report, and eliminate safety hazards within work area.
Follow safety and exposure control procedures.
Quality Improvement: Actively participates in the Hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program, actively supports and implements Department-specific Quality improvement initiatives and projects, recommends process improvement as appropriate, reports any quality issues in service delivery and consistently commits to a focus on quality improvement and organizational excellence.
Emergency Management: As an employee of Penobscot Valley Hospital, the position has an inherent role to care for our community members when in need. To this regard, the incumbent will be expected to participate in emergency/disaster preparedness planning and drills as requested. When called upon during a real life disaster/emergency event, the incumbent will be expected to participate in the Hospital's response to this event, within the scope of professional and personal ability to do so.
Requirements
National medical / clinical laboratory technician certification required, such as ASCP, AMT, or equivalent. BLS required.

Education and Experience:
