Laboratory assistant job in Charleston, SC
Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc. Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures. Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and or other specimen collection (ex. urine or fecal) as required.
Demonstrate technique/s using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Fully understand all of the physicians' orders.
Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
Check all test requisitions or computer label against script to ensure 100% correct.
Package specimens for transport
Stores specimen sample according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection container/ tube, accurately labels, follows different procedures as outlined by specific to protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen.
Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Attends annual department trainings
Answer telephone calls, read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.Qualifications:
Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed as required in some states.
Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
Reliable transportation with at least 4 years of licensed driving experience and possess a valid driver's license issued in the state of residence.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
High School Diploma or GED

Evaluation Procedures: Students will be evaluated on their work performance which includes their ability to follow instructions and to complete work without errors. Students are expected to be punctual and to contact their supervisor if they will be late or unable to come to work. **Job Summary and Qualifications**
Assists in the technical and clerical aspects of the Laboratory department. Manages collection, acceptance, receipt and processing of all specimens into the Laboratory department(s). Attend to samples received through pneumatic tube stations. Performs specimen collection (i.e. venipuncture, capillary puncture). Complete computerized registration of patient samples using Laboratory Information System (LIS). Performs waived testing as trained. Processes samples to be sent to reference laboratories for test completion following specific guidelines for packaging and shipment as outlined by each recipient. Process microbiological samples for culture applying sample to appropriate medium and placing in appropriate temperature controlled environment. Assist technical staff by organizing and preparing samples for testing, such as centrifugation, preparation of smears for staining, and placing samples on analyzers for testing that do not require programming. Prepare samples for long term storage after testing is complete. Contact external facilities to report stat and critical results. Complete basic quality control steps (i.e. sterility testing, new lot qualification). Perform reagent and disposable inventory management tasks. Assemble requested supplies for specimen collection at external facilities
**What qualifications you will need:**
+ Familiarity with a hospital laboratory is desired.
+ Medical terminology preferred.

Job Summary
This role is responsible for independently performing moderate-to-high complexity testing across multiple disciplines, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant results while maintaining a safe and efficient laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Testing:
Perform laboratory analyses, quality control, and proficiency testing per SOP and CAP standards.
Verify specimen integrity, prioritize work, evaluate and interpret data, and document results.
Assist with evaluation and implementation of new methods.
Instrumentation:
Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment.
Document all QC and maintenance per policy.
Information Handling:
Utilize Cerner/STAR LIS for test ordering, receiving, result verification, and pending test follow-up.
Maintain patient confidentiality and regulatory compliance.
Communication & Customer Service:
Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, laboratory staff, and patients.
Provide timely updates and maintain professional rapport.
Compliance & Safety:
Adhere to hospital and laboratory policies, safety standards, and OSHA regulations.
Participate in continuing education and department performance improvement initiatives.
Qualifications:
Certification: ASCP or NCA registration -
Required
Education:
Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent with ASCP/NCA eligibility.
Alternate route to certification per ASCP or NCA accepted.
Experience:
Strong generalist skills across Core Lab, Blood Bank, and basic Microbiology.
Cerner LIS experience required.
Skilled in phlebotomy.
Skills: Ability to operate laboratory instrumentation, perform patient phlebotomy, and make informed decisions under pressure.
