The goal of the Lacy-Hulbert Lab is to understand how different aspects of the immune system cooperate to identify and combat potentially infectious organisms while preventing immune attack against innocuous microbes or the body's own self. This position is up to 19 hours a week, within the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday (exact schedule to be determined). Under the direction of the Cytology and Infectious Disease Supervisor, the purpose of the Infectious Disease Molecular Lab Assistant is to provide general assistance to technologists and pathologists to ensure smooth workflow within the Infectious Disease department. The duties associated with this position encompass a wide range of tasks dependent on current departmental section needs, test volumes and workflows. This position may require flexible hours and weekend call rotations. The Molecular Lab Assistant must adhere to HIPAA standards. Due to various environmental hazards presented in the workplace such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc., employees must also adhere to strict Standard Operating Procedures and Personal Protective Equipment requirements. Position Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am-3:30pm Essential Duties: Perform intake, accessioning and data entry Prepare specimens for HPV and STD testing Load, unload and maintain department equipment to include Cobas 4800 and Hologic Panther Order and maintain departmental supplies, track inventory Responsible for the proper handling and disposal of all bio-hazardous materials and chemically hazardous materials including the neutralization or recycling of chemicals before disposal or reuse. The goal of the Harrison Lab is to understand how immune cells promote barrier tissue integrity and repair, and to understand how this goes awry during disease. This work-study position is for up to 19 hours each week. Responsibilities The individual in this position will be involved in projects exploring the immune response to commensal and pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. The techniques likely to be used include DNA isolation, PCR and gel electrophoresis to conduct genotyping, basic flow cytometry of circulating blood immune cell populations, tissue sectioning, immunofluorescence staining and microscopy. They will also be responsible for general laboratory duties including preparation of stock solutions, lab stocking and maintenance. Students will gain experience in the following areas: conduct DNA isolation, perform PCR and gel electrophoresis, and determine sample genotype. Conduct tissue dissection and cell isolation. Conduct cell staining and basic flow cytometry. Stock lab supplies, prepare reagents, autoclave. This position is solely open to candidates who are work-study eligible.
