The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for assisting in the procurement, testing, and processing of laboratory specimens. The Laboratory Assistant provides data entry, supply inventory, and customer service support to facilitate specimen processing and result entry. The primary responsibilities for this position will vary by department and may include any or a combination of all) of the following: Essential Functions & Responsibilities: * Enters and verifies test requests accurately and efficiently. * Obtains, enters and verifies patient information accurately and efficiently. * Assists with specimen storage, retrieval and disposal following standard precautions to abide by all regulatory policies and procedures. * Performs technical duties to include: a) collects Fine Needle Aspirations; b) processes specimens according to test requirements; c) prepares Bone Marrow smears; d) prepares slide processing; e) performs instrument maintenance; f) prepares slide staining; g) performs thermometer calibration; h) performs plating specimens for Microbiology on various medias * Prepares samples for appropriate transport to reference laboratory. Generates and reviews pending logs for outstanding specimen processing. * Provides telephone support for notification of non-critical laboratory test values. Faxes and prints reports as needed. * Assists staff with inventory management; rotates and restocks reagents and supplies as needed. * Takes daily temperatures of laboratory refrigerators, freezers, and incubators as required. Performs required daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance and function checks as required for eyewash station, safety shower, plasma thawer, etc. * Supports Department Supervisor with various projects and tasks as needed. * Understands the complexities of specimen integrity and makes first line decisions regarding specimen acceptability. * Properly washes and disinfects laboratory equipment and materials. * Tracks and receives batches of specimens arriving from off-site locations assuring that each specimen is accounted for and adequate for testing. * Operates and maintains operation of high volume centrifuges to include daily and weekly maintenance and disinfection as needed. * Troubleshoots and documents specimen integrity issues and patient orders. * Assists with the front phlebotomy desk duties as needed to include: answering the phones, coordination of stat orders with notification to the appropriate phlebotomist, answering of the pneumatic tube station and receiving of specimens into the lab system. * Assists the Supervisor in the training of new staff regarding lab assistant and specimen processing duties. * Monitors the performance of the automated track system in Chemistry and alerts techs when an issue arises and/or action is needed. * Compares vendor invoices against inventory receipt to check for accuracy/errors in billing. * Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: * Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required. * Two years of previous clinical laboratory experience required or B.S. degree in a Biological Sciences or second year student in MLS or MLT clinical program.* * For students in the Lab Assistant role, must complete MLS or MLT program within 2 years of hire. * Basic computer skills required and previous experience with Microsoft Office preferred. * Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. * Possess excellent customer service and problem-solving skills. Reports to the Department Manager, Supervisor or Lead Clinical Lab Scientist and is responsible for following established policies, procedures, and regulations. Performs/assists with various clinical laboratory test procedures and ensures proper maintenance and operation of instrumentation. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Works with Manager, Supervisor or Lead Clinical Lab Scientist on a variety of laboratory projects. Participates in PI, QA, and QC to ensure all regulatory requirements maintain an ‘in compliance' status. Functions in a charge or lead role as assigned for the days operations to ensure safe quality and efficient workflow, practices, staffing and operations. Performs other duties as assigned. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist in all disciplines by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP). CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire for designated job roles. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent. Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with physicians, nursing personnel and other clinicians relative to patient testing and information gathering. Six to twelve months of laboratory training/job experience necessary in order to become familiar with a variety of laboratory testing procedures. Ability to resolve technical problems using standard guides and procedures. Analytical skills necessary in order to perform and interpret routine tests and recognize abnormal/critical test results. Must be able to determine the appropriate course of action for abnormal, atypical or critical test results. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and other Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) software preferred. WORKING CONDITIONS Laboratory service areas have work environments with frequent exposure to physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors from specimens and chemicals. Frequent exposure to infectious agents when handling hazardous material, but potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed. Participates in continuing education activities. Assesses competency of others after two years of testing experience in the laboratory. Participates in all facility/corporate mandatory annual training within set deadlines. Cooperates in assisting the laboratory team in the completion of miscellaneous duties including specimen receiving and putting away supplies when received in the department. Organizes and completes daily tasks in assigned area{s}. Troubleshoots/resolves instrument problems and documents corrective action appropriately; when necessary, performs instrumentation repairs. Investigates/resolves specimen collection problems using Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and specimen tracking tool when appropriate. Performs quality control and documents appropriately. Works within quality control limits and trends, and follows proper department procedure for corrective action. Performs preventative maintenance and safety checks of equipment and documents according to schedule. Demonstrates knowledge and skills to train new employees and/or students in general lab policies/procedures as well as department/section specific policies/procedures.
