Responsibilities:

The purpose of this position is to conduct experimental tasks which contribute to the loss prevention solutions in the area of material flammability and fire dynamics under the supervision of senior research scientists.

The job responsibilities include:

• Design, fabricate and maintain mechanical/electrical test apparatus and instrumentations for reliable measurement of temperature, velocity, heat flux, energy release, etc.
• Perform scientific experiments on material flammability, fire dynamics and battery safety to obtain accurate and reliable data
• Work with senior scientists to conduct data analysis and problem solving
• Develop specific technical procedures and recommend purchase of necessary components, equipment and supplies related to assigned projects
• Effectively manage projects related to lab experiments

Qualifications:

The position requires Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related technical fields, with 3 years of related work experience in scientific/industrial labs.

Good understanding of mechanical and electrical principles necessary to conduct scientific experiment.

Strong hands-on mechanical laboratory skills required.

Capable of designing, fabricating, and trouble-shooting experimental apparatus as required.

Fundamental technical knowledge of combustion, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, etc.

Computer literacy - data acquisition software, programing using Python or Matlab, experience with computer design software such as Solidworks, AutoCAD

• Knowledge of personal and area safety in the working environment
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated history of strong performance of teamwork, and project management skills
• Demonstrated ability of providing innovative solutions to lab problems

The lab is seeking a Research Assistant III who will oversee day to day operations of a research laboratory and perform a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests, specimen preparations and experimental procedures for the purpose of research.
This Research Assistant III will be responsible for:

General Duties:

+ Reviews and authorizes supply and equipment orders including all lab orders and monitors stocks of general supplies for re-ordering purposes.

+ Oversees maintenance of facility equipment, requesting repair services as needed.

+ Monitor lab members to ensure that they are adhering to safety guidelines and that they are reporting problems/injuries in a timely manner.

+ Negotiates service contracts and enlists other labs to participate in service contract cost prior to obtaining service contracts, schedules preventative maintenance and annual calibration of laboratory equipment and constantly makes sure lab equipment is in working order.

+ Communicates lab spending by lab member to the PI.

+ Monitors and ensures compliance with hospital and governmental regulations.

+ Prepares and revises all drug use permits and institutional biosafety protocols manages lab material transfer agreements, rodent import/export requests and prepares lab IRB protocols for human blood and tissue use.

+ Adept at troubleshooting, diagnosing and in some cases repairing complex laboratory equipment and microscopes.

+ Coordinates collaborations with other laboratories.

+ Supervises an annual inventory of all lab supplies and reagents.

+ Responsible for general laboratory upkeep including keeping inventories of all reagents and chemicals, ordering, negotiating prices, organizing lab, placing and receiving all orders, and keeping common areas clean.

+ Works closely with all departments within the hospital including accounting, procurement, materials management, legal, human resources, research operations and safety and acts as a liaison for the lab with other departments and external contacts.

Animal Duties:

+ Supervises a constantly up to date mouse inventory to control colony size and cost.

+ Manage import and export of mouse strains.

+ Trains new technicians and post-docs in all laboratory and animal procedures and constantly monitor all employees to keep them in compliance of animal welfare and safety rules.

+ Must have experience working with an IACUC and animal protocols.

+ Experience in all mouse blood and tissue collection techniques including necropsy, injections, cardiac perfusions, retro-orbital bleeding etc.

In order to qualify, you must have:

+ Bachelor's degree AND a minimum three years of relevant experience OR Master's of Science AND one year of relevant work experience.

+ Analytical skills to resolve complex problems requiring the use of scientific, mathematical, or technical principles and in depth, experienced based knowledge.

+ Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

+ Ability to make a 2 year commitment.

As a Research Support Assistant, you will provide support Clinical Research Data Specialist, Research Program Administrator, or Research Manager. In this role, you will provide the administrative support for research protocols by providing document management and data management.
