Axia's full-service, state-of-the-art laboratory performs anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, and molecular (DNA-based) testing. The Cytotechnologist provides professional services, including interpretation of Pap tests, slide preparations, proficiency testing, quality control and other functions and is a key member of our laboratory team, helping Axia to provide a full-scope of services to Axia Women's Health patients.

Interprets physician notes and obtains clarification when information is missing or contradictive.
Receives, accesses, or rejects specimens by following standard operating procedures (SOP's).
Determines specimen adequacy for all cytology and histology samples.
Processes specimens and evaluates control slides to ensure proper staining patterns. Follows the College of American Pathologist (CAP) requirements for performing proficiency testing and reporting results, and completes all procedures expected in the scheduled time without loss of work quality.
Grosses, processes, embeds, cuts, stains, special stains, IHC, recuts, and coverslips all cytological and surgical specimens received into the anatomic pathology laboratory.
Examines and evaluates cell samples for normal cell patterns, non-malignant, or benign conditions that might exist, such as microorganisms, therapeutic change inflammation, repair and hyperplastic changes, and determines severity and cell type of abnormalities, and, if needed, provides criteria to identify origin and makes appropriate recommendations on report.
Reviews cases at the microscope and discusses diagnostic criteria with pathologists, senior cytotechnologists, or other cytotechnologists as needed.
Performs data entry of case information into the appropriate computer system, ensuring that all identifying information is accurate and in the appropriate format; uses recognized terminology to document and transmit diagnosis/findings in the laboratory information system.
Documents daily, weekly, and monthly workloads, and performs and documents daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual maintenance.
Validate equipment, detection kits, antibody lots, blockers, inhibitors, control tissue and new antibodies before use on any specimen.
Checks and monitors pH of solutions, temperatures, and room humidity on a regular basis by documenting the value for each on the proper chart/log.
Prepare stock reagents for use on manual and automated processes.
Performs calibration of equipment as required.
Participates in laboratory quality management functions.

Trains, evaluates and counsels section employees. Reviews section technical staff competency. Also evaluates staff performance according to regulatory guidelines. Initiates retraining for employees as needed. Ensures that staff participate in appropriate continuing education programs, especially those designed to enhance knowledge appropriate to job performance.
Schedules section employees, ensuring appropriate section coverage, reviewing schedules with others (e.g., shift supervisor, laboratory administration) as needed to ensure that laboratory services are not interrupted. In scheduling, avoids overtime where possible. Rotates section employees to increase staffing flexibility and to maintain staff competency on appropriate section "benches" as needed. Evaluates staff time-off requests in a fair manner, which ensures appropriate staffing levels.
Selects, implements and maintains technical equipment for section, writing justification for capital equipment, and evaluating cost-benefit of various alternatives and makes recommendations to laboratory administration.
Maintains knowledge of section technical requirements, especially regulatory requirements. Maintains laboratory section's readiness for inspections. Informs laboratory administration of compliance problems and makes plans to correct such failures and carries out these plans as appropriate. Participates in section's inspections, reviewing deficiencies and correcting as needed or assigned.
Maintains section supply inventory at appropriate levels. Reviews problems related to supplies.
Follows all laboratory and hospital safety policies (including, but not limited to chemical safety, e.g., the laboratory's Chemical Hygiene Plan, infection control policies, etc.) and reviews safety issues as needed. Must be able to perform functions using personal protective equipment and barrier protection, such as disposable gloves, laboratory coats, shields, goggles, etc. Must be able to handle a variety of hazardous materials, such as chemicals and pathogenic organisms. Handles hazardous materials using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); ensures hazardous waste is accurately labeled, stored and maintained in appropriate type of sealed container, when readied for removal from department. Assists with maintaining appropriate documentation. Ensures that staff adhere to safety procedures and that staff receive training or retraining as needed or required. Reports safety concerns appropriately, e.g., laboratory administration or Safety Coordinator, and helps with planning to improve safety of the laboratory.
Job Requirements
B. S. in Medical Technology (B.S.M.T. or equivalent, e.g., HHS examination or ability to meet CLIA qualifications for Moderate complexity laboratory testing).
Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years experience required.
Multiple years of leadership experience in a clinical laboratory preferred.

Performs a wide variety of laboratory procedures using both manual and automated methods. Is expected to show a considerable degree of independent judgment regarding the performance and reporting of results. Actively participates in the quality improvement activities of the laboratory, including monthly quality control and assurance reporting, validation of new and revised tests, and preparation for laboratory inspections. Participates in clinical validation/verification of clinical laboratory test or instrumentation. Maintains CAP and accreditation and regulatory readiness at all times and participates in corrective actions and pre-inspection reviews. May sign off on training for new hires and ongoing competencies. Participates in the TUHS pathology residency and student program.
Education
Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology, Biological Sciences or Chemistry Required
Experience
3 years experience in Molecular Diagnostics testing Required
Licenses
Specialist Molecular Biology Preferred or
Technologist Molecular Biology Preferred
