Job Responsibilities
Supervise the day to day operations of the department
Established TAT and goals set for the region.
Provide technical and daily operations support.
Ensure laboratory tests are accurately performed and results are reported in a timely manner
Directly supervise, train, and mentor laboratory personnel of the department
Monitor daily workflow in the lab and schedule adequate assay coverage
Responsible for ensuring all shifts in the department are properly staffed
Research and resolve any production errors while escalating when necessary
Engage in continuous process and service level improvements
Ensure all equipment is being properly maintained through Quality Control
Prepare and maintain Quality Assurance records and documents
Evaluate new process improvements and make appropriate recommendations
Meet regularly with direct reports to provide coaching and feedback for their development
Perform bench work as needed and maintain proficiency/competency in technical operations
Ensure all work is in accordance with state and Federal regulations
Responsible for administering and managing policies and procedures
Process and maintain payroll and personnel files
Perform administrative duties as needed
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or meet local regulatory (CLIA & State) requirements
Minimum 4 years of experience as a Technologist/Technician
Previous supervisor/leadership experience
Must be ASCP certified as a Medical Technologist
Strong working knowledge of CLIA, CAP and relevant state regulations
Understanding of laboratory operations as well as policies and procedures
Proficient with Laboratory Information Systems and Microsoft Office
Strong communication skills; both written and verbal
High level of attention to detail with strong organizational skills
Comfortability making decisions in a changing environment
Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position

Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician II (MLT II) in their role as testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results. Each individual performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities. As outlined by CLIA, after successful completion of orientation, training and competency assessment on all instruments/methods applicable to their role:
* Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results;
* Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples;
* Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed;
* Follow the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance;
* Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical consultant, technical supervisor, clinical consultant or director; and
* Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. 42 CFR 493.**************.

Core Duties

Ask the course instructor to answer any questions you may have regarding the procedures, set-ups, calculations, waste management, and/or safety issues before the designated laboratory time.
* Assist with regular pre-lab period set-up: Gather instructional items, Set-up demonstrations, prepare solutions, gather reagents, samples, etc. for use by students in upcoming lab section. Help load vans with necessary equipment, materials, and supplies for field trips.
* When requested, provide brief introductory presentations at the beginning of the lab period.
* Assist students during the lab by answering questions or providing experimental advice.
* Clean up after each lab: Properly dispose of solutions that do not keep. Clean spills using proper methods. Clean/wipe-down the hoods, lab benches, the areas around balances, and the areas around instruments used during the laboratory period. Return and secure all caps and tops to reagent bottles. Refill/replace reagents and consumable supplies as needed. Return reagents, supplies, equipment to location found at beginning of the laboratory period. Take dirty glassware or bio-hazardous waste bags to the dishwashing room. Wash and put away other glassware, as needed. Unload vans after field trips, rinse/clean equipment used in field, return to appropriate storage location.
* Show up at time designated by instructor. TAs must notify Instructor if they cannot prep lab, attend, or assist with clean up for a lab period for any reason
* Promote Safety in the Laboratory: Enforce proper use of protective equipment, proper handling of chemical spills, proper handling of broken glassware, proper collection of chemical waste for disposal, and proper disposal of non-hazardous laboratory waste. Be alert for potentially unsafe behavior, practices, set-ups, and situations, and correct them; or bring them to the attention of the instructor if you are unsure of the proper procedures to be used.
* Attend all TA meetings (times to be arranged with instructor).
* If part of the TA position, attend (and drive a van) for off-campus field trips and over-weekend field trips (if TA for field laboratory course). Field Lab TAs must complete driver's safety course with Public Safety.
* Provide feedback to faculty on exercises.
* May be asked to assist with grading (exams, quizzes, lab assignments).
* May be asked to prepare review materials for lab sections, as needed.
* May be asked to independently run Open Laboratory sessions.

Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.

Have earned a doctoral, master's or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
Have education and training equivalent to an associate degree that includes at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either:
24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
24 semester hours of science courses that include: six (6) semester hours of chemistry, six (6) semester hours of biology; and twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
AND
Have laboratory training that includes either of the following:

At least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.

The Knight Cardiovascular Institute Research Assistant II (Lab Technician) is responsible for various duties related to sample processing and laboratory maintenance for both investigator initiated and sponsored clinical trials. They will maintain inventory, cleanliness, equipment ordering, sample processing, and participating in ongoing benchtop research and data collection. The RA2 assists with purchasing of equipment and supplies and communicating with scientific and clinical staff.

Function/Duties of Position

Creates and maintains a database of all bio samples in cryostorage.
Processes samples after collection and prepares for shipping.
Prepare, finalize, and deliver all packages for shipment at days end.

3. Benchtop research for investigator initiated clinical trials, including but not limited to:
Perform various molecular techniques such as DNA/RNA/library preparation, PCR, Sanger sequencing, and other assays as deemed necessary.
Gel preparation, loading, and imaging.
Preparation of reagent solutions needed for molecular research.

Monitor and maintain consistent laboratory day-to-day operations, assist with purchases of equipment and supplies, and oversee maintenance of equipment.
4. General Laboratory:
Perform general lab upkeep and record keeping as necessary.
Provide support to stocking laboratory.

JOB SUMMARY: This position is a part of the science department and assists the science faculty with lab related tasks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS ROLE:
Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and web are preferred.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Previous office experience preferred but not required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position requires working at a computer, typing, sitting, and standing.
This position requires use of office equipment such as computers, printers, telephones, copiers, adding machines, fax machines, and scanners.
