This position requires a highly motivated individual who will take directions from the VP of Veterinary Services and Research, Coral Laboratory Supervisor, and Coral Laboratory Aquarist in assisting with the maintenance and general husbandry of the deep-water and mesophotic coral systems. As an intern, you can expect to get hands-on experience in the daily care of our coral systems, tracking growth rate and research. Throughout the Internship, Interns will learn various tasks required for the daily operation of multiple coral systems; gain valuable knowledge in water chemistry, aquarium life support systems, aquatic biology, and quarantine systems; and develop skills in time management, communication, and teamwork. The position will also be responsible for adhering to all aquarium safety protocols, standard operating procedures, and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accreditation standards. The goal is to help Interns succeed professionally in any chosen field.
QUALIFICATIONS
· 18 years of age or older
· Enrolled in or recent graduate of a four-year college program in biology, marine biology, or another related field
· Ability to work weekends, holidays, and possible late hours
· Ability to find and secure housing for the duration of the Internship
· Ability to work with and around various fish and crustaceans
· Ability to work full-time, at least 2 days per week
· Ability to perform physically demanding job duties on a daily basis
· A valid driver's license and ability to travel to and from work
· Previous animal care experience, such as volunteering at an animal shelter or completing other animal care Internships
· Previous coral experience is preferred

Responsibilities
Perform clinical laboratory testing for nucleic acid-based diseases for Department of Defense (DoD) beneficiaries and on survey samples submitted to the laboratory for quality assurance and proficiency testing.
Routinely performs testing on blood, cells, cell cultures, and various tissue samples from patients, deceased individuals, and fetuses (prenatal testing).
Must maintain sample tracking and integrity meticulously to prevent cross- contamination of samples. Nucleic acid testing is subject to a multitude of constantly changing variables, which can affect the results.
Demonstrates high-level laboratory problem solving skills and analytical abilities to successfully perform assigned laboratory testing.
Receives packages containing samples, and verifies the presence of the correct contents and paperwork, the adequacy of the sample, and the documentation.
Creates labels and folders for the test to be performed. Records the samples on the correct worksheets in the laboratory, in computer information management systems, and on Excel spreadsheets.
Extracts nucleic acid from samples utilizing multiple established protocols. Assesses the adequacy of the nucleic acid obtained, quantifies final nucleic acid samples, and documents results of nucleic acid extraction processes. Performs calculations to determine appropriate dilutions of nucleic acid and/or quantities to be used for various testing procedures.
Performs a variety of nucleic acid-based analytical procedures including (but not limited to) polymerase chain reactions (PCR), Southern analysis, allele-specific oligonucleotide hybridization, short-tandem repeat length analysis, DNA or RNA sequencing, restriction enzyme digestion, capillary or gel-based electrophoresis, microarrays, and allele-specific PCR. Utilizes computerized robotics, column and array-based sequencers, various electrophoresis and hybridization equipment, and photographic and digital imaging equipment to perform and document testing. Analyzes and interprets the results obtained.
Performs PCR to amplify regions of nucleic acid of interest using protocols established in the laboratory. Pours and runs (via electrophoresis) agarose gels to assess the adequacy of the PCR products obtained. Documents the results utilizing digital and/or photographic imaging systems.
If PCR reactions are not successful, performs problem-solving steps to determine the cause of the failure and corrects the problem. Must repeat PCR reactions on individual samples as required to obtain adequate results.
PCR must be performed without contamination. Perform all PCR reactions with contamination free controls.
Correctly tracks nucleic acid/PCR samples to maintain chain of identity and prevent sample mix-up.
Achieves the laboratory standards for turn-around time.
Documents the results of testing in patient folders and laboratory information management systems (LIMS). Presents testing results to the laboratory director for verification and final reporting. Types draft versions of laboratory reports. Verifies and certifies results in LIMS using established protocols.
Maintains data on testing and PCR failure rates, problems encountered, and solutions to those problems. Tabulates data and performs statistical evaluation of data for Quality Assurance monitoring.
Participates in the development and evaluation of new testing equipment and/or techniques.
Collates data and documents validation studies on new testing procedures developed in the lab, as assigned by the laboratory director.
Generates operating instructions (OIs) in accordance with established guidelines and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) for new procedures, as assigned by the laboratory director or designee.
Maintains assigned equipment by performing and documenting required daily checks, scheduling and/or performing preventive maintenance, and obtaining repairs as required. Makes assigned solutions for general lab use according to established laboratory procedures. Monitors levels of assigned supply items and orders additional supplies as necessary to maintain adequate stock on hand in the laboratory.
Answers laboratory telephone calls, which may include calls from other laboratories or providers seeking information. Correctly provides information about test availability, sample and consent requirements, availability of forms, and other general lab information to callers. Correctly refers callers to the genetic counselor, a supervisor, and/or lab director as indicated.
Actively participates in preparations for CAP, Joint Commission and other inspections.
Adheres to infection control procedures including use of personal protective equipment and proper disposal of bio-hazardous waste.

At the mutual agreement of the Contractor and the Government, alternative schedules may be implemented. Any planned absences of the HCW shall be communicated to the Government supervisor in advance of the absence in order to ensure that clinical operations are not adversely affected. Responsibilities
While on duty, the Contractor personnel shall be neat and clean, free from visible dirt and stains, well groomed, and appropriately dressed. The Contractor personnel's clothing shall fit correctly to provide a professional, modest appearance, in keeping with normally accepted community standards of dress for the work being performed.
Facial hair (including beards, mustaches, and sideburns) shall be controlled (restrained) or trimmed. It shall not interfere with safe work practices, look unkempt, or be unclean. Facial hair shall not interfere with the face seal if a tight-fitting respirator (e.g., N95) is required to be worn for normal duties.
The Contractor personnel shall display legible MTF-provided identification media on his/her outer clothing.
Practice general hospital safety, infection control, aseptic and sterile techniques for safe handling of sharps, electrical equipment, and blood or blood products, to include cleaning of work areas and equipment.
Participate in the orientation, training, and evaluation of duty performance of newly assigned personnel phlebotomists ensuring compliance with standards of care and practice.
Ensure a safe work environment and safe employee work habits.
Complete applicable documentation to include manual and computer methods.
Review laboratory request slips for completeness and identify discrepancies.
Possess/maintain proper certification and skills to perform required duties within regulatory compliance and with minimal oversight.
Adhere to and maintain a system of supply inventory management with unit supply custodian to ensure adequate stock levels of consumable supplies are available within Laboratory to minimize waste and ensure uninterrupted services.
Ensure all MTF equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift.
Ensures preventative maintenance and routine cleaning are performed.
Be productive and perform duties with minimal supervisory direction.
Contractor personnel shall perform a wide range of procedures involved in the collection of blood with minimal supervision. These procedures involve assembling required equipment, locating an accessible vein, disinfecting the area, performing venipuncture, treating the puncture site, labeling blood containers, and managing patient or donor reactions.
Greets and interviews patients. Receive and interpret laboratory request slips, review request slips for required information, and determine the fitness of the patient for tests requested by the healthcare provider/physician (i.e., fasting state, liquid intake, medication, dietary instruction). Ensure specimens are collected in the amount and type of specimen required (e.g., with or without a particular anticoagulant) for each laboratory test. Enter laboratory orders into Composite Health Care System (CHCS).
Perform timed blood collection procedures, such as glucose tolerance tests. Utilizes glucose point of care glucometer which provides immediate glucose results in evaluating the patient's condition before administering the glucose load.
Collect blood specimens from ambulatory or bed patients via venipuncture, finger, or infant heel stick, as appropriate, using standardized procedures. For venipuncture specimens, this entails the application of a tourniquet, selection of the proper vein, disinfection of the puncture site, and entering the vein using a sterile blood collection and vacutainer. The blood collection may require the use of a lancet, capillary tube, pipette, or glass slide for blood smears.
Dress the skin puncture site after blood collection. Carefully observe the patient for any sign or symptoms of physiological reactions after blood collection and take appropriate first aid measures to prevent injury and stabilize the patient.
Verifies specimen labels, properly label collected blood specimens with appropriate patient identification information, and deliver specimens to the Laboratory's Central Operations section within the established specified time frame.
Provide immediate care to patients by recognizing adverse reactions to procedures and instituting immediate corrective measures.
Mentors Phase II laboratory students and medical technology interns in phlebotomy.
Perform applicable documentation.
Maintain blood collection tray in a clean, hygienic state and replenish blood collection supplies as needed. Maintain supply levels for drawing stations and shelves on a daily basis.
Perform clerical duties in Laboratory Central Operations. Answer telephones, look up test results in the laboratory computer, and fax test results to ordering healthcare providers/physicians.
Process patient demographic data into the laboratory automated data system (i.e. CHCS or manual system). Identifies and corrects patient data errors. Verifies physician, patient information, ward and clinic locations, and provider codes for entering accession information into the computer terminal, and work with wards, clinics, and other medical personnel to resolve missing or incorrect data.
Receive telephone calls and visitors to the laboratory. Determine nature of call or visit. Direct callers or visitors to appropriate personnel. Personally provide the information requested when routine or procedural matters of the laboratory are involved. Apply established guidelines concerning the release of information on test results, adhering to the provision to the Privacy Act and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
Contractor personnel shall provide patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of their privacy and personal dignity.
Contractor personnel shall maintain open and professional communication with members of the MTF staff. Complaints validated by the Flight Commander/Medical Director shall be reported in writing to the Contract Administrator and the Contractor for action. Failure of the Contractor to correct validated complaints raised by the MTF staff and the Contracting Officer (CO) will be considered a failure to perform.
Contractor personnel shall prepare all documentation (to include patient records) to meet or exceed established standards of the MTF, to include but not limited to, timeliness, accuracy, content, and signature. Only MTF and Air Force-approved abbreviations shall be used for documentation of the patient/donor health records.
Qualifications
Degree: Certificate.
Education: High school equivalent and completion of NAACLS or two part Phlebotomy program.
Experience: A minimum of three years of experience is required within the previous 48 months. Certified phlebotomy technicians with less than three years of laboratory experience would be considered if prior military service National Guard, Reserve or internship at this facility. Candidate acceptance will be at the discretion of the Government Supervisor.
Board Certification: Contractor personnel shall be certified (registered) (Phlebotomists) IAW an approved certifying agency (e.g., ASCP, NCA, AMT). Contractor personnel must provide proof of board certification prior to providing services to the 81 MDG and maintain their certification throughout
their employment. Contractor personnel registered or certified by national/medical associations shall continue to meet the minimum standards for CME to remain current as prescribed in Chapter 4, AFI 41-117, Medical Service Officer Education, 25 Mar 15. CME hours will be reported to the Medial Director, annually on the first normal duty day in January for the previous calendar year. Schedule: Will be scheduled for 8 hour duty days with a 1 hour unpaid lunch, 40 hours per week. Responsibilities
While on duty, the Contractor personnel shall be neat and clean, free from visible dirt and stains, well groomed, and appropriately dressed. The Contractor personnel's clothing shall fit correctly to provide a professional, modest appearance, in keeping with normally accepted community standards of dress for the work being performed.
Facial hair (including beards, mustaches, and sideburns) shall be controlled (restrained) or trimmed. It shall not interfere with safe work practices, look unkempt, or be unclean. Facial hair shall not interfere with the face seal if a tight-fitting respirator (e.g., N95) is required to be worn for normal duties.
The Contractor personnel shall display legible MTF-provided identification media on his/her outer clothing.
Practice general hospital safety, infection control, aseptic and sterile techniques for safe handling of sharps, electrical equipment, and blood or blood products, to include cleaning of work areas and equipment.
Participate in the orientation, training, and evaluation of duty performance of newly assigned personnel phlebotomists ensuring compliance with standards of care and practice.
Ensure a safe work environment and safe employee work habits.
Complete applicable documentation to include manual and computer methods.
Review laboratory request slips for completeness and identify discrepancies.
Possess/maintain proper certification and skills to perform required duties within regulatory compliance and with minimal oversight.
Adhere to and maintain a system of supply inventory management with unit supply custodian to ensure adequate stock levels of consumable supplies are available within Laboratory to minimize waste and ensure uninterrupted services.
Ensure all MTF equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift.

Contractor personnel shall perform a wide range of procedures involved in the collection of blood with minimal supervision. These procedures involve assembling required equipment, locating an accessible vein, disinfecting the area, performing venipuncture, treating the puncture site, labeling blood containers, and managing patient or donor reactions.
Greets and interviews patients. Receive and interpret laboratory request slips, review request slips for required information, and determine the fitness of the patient for tests requested by the healthcare provider/physician (i.e., fasting state, liquid intake, medication, dietary instruction). Ensure specimens are collected in the amount and type of specimen required (e.g., with or without a particular anticoagulant) for each laboratory test. Enter laboratory orders into Composite Health Care System (CHCS).
Perform timed blood collection procedures, such as glucose tolerance tests. Utilizes glucose point of care glucometer which provides immediate glucose results in evaluating the patient's condition before administering the glucose load.
Collect blood specimens from ambulatory or bed patients via venipuncture, finger, or infant heel stick, as appropriate, using standardized procedures. For venipuncture specimens, this entails the application of a tourniquet, selection of the proper vein, disinfection of the puncture site, and entering the vein using a sterile blood collection and vacutainer. The blood collection may require the use of a lancet, capillary tube, pipette, or glass slide for blood smears.
Dress the skin puncture site after blood collection. Carefully observe the patient for any sign or symptoms of physiological reactions after blood collection and take appropriate first aid measures to prevent injury and stabilize the patient.
Verifies specimen labels, properly label collected blood specimens with appropriate patient identification information, and deliver specimens to the Laboratory's Central Operations section within the established specified time frame.
Provide immediate care to patients by recognizing adverse reactions to procedures and instituting immediate corrective measures.
Mentors Phase II laboratory students and medical technology interns in phlebotomy.
Perform applicable documentation.
Maintain blood collection tray in a clean, hygienic state and replenish blood collection supplies as needed. Maintain supply levels for drawing stations and shelves on a daily basis.
Perform clerical duties in Laboratory Central Operations. Answer telephones, look up test results in the laboratory computer, and fax test results to ordering healthcare providers/physicians.
Process patient demographic data into the laboratory automated data system (i.e. CHCS or manual system). Identifies and corrects patient data errors. Verifies physician, patient information, ward and clinic locations, and provider codes for entering accession information into the computer terminal, and work with wards, clinics, and other medical personnel to resolve missing or incorrect data.
Receive telephone calls and visitors to the laboratory. Determine nature of call or visit. Direct callers or visitors to appropriate personnel. Personally provide the information requested when routine or procedural matters of the laboratory are involved. Apply established guidelines concerning the release of information on test results, adhering to the provision to the Privacy Act and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
Contractor personnel shall provide patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of their privacy and personal dignity.
Contractor personnel shall maintain open and professional communication with members of the MTF staff. Complaints validated by the Flight Commander/Medical Director shall be reported in writing to the Contract Administrator and the Contractor for action. Failure of the Contractor to correct validated complaints raised by the MTF staff and the Contracting Officer (CO) will be considered a failure to perform.
Contractor personnel shall prepare all documentation (to include patient records) to meet or exceed established standards of the MTF, to include but not limited to, timeliness, accuracy, content, and signature. Only MTF and Air Force-approved abbreviations shall be used for documentation of the patient/donor health records.
Qualifications
Degree: Certificate.
Education: High school equivalent and completion of NAACLS or two part Phlebotomy program.
Experience: A minimum of three years of experience is required within the previous 48 months. Certified phlebotomy technicians with less than three years of laboratory experience would be considered if prior military service National Guard, Reserve or internship at this facility. Candidate acceptance will be at the discretion of the Government Supervisor.
Board Certification: Contractor personnel shall be certified (registered) (Phlebotomists) IAW an approved certifying agency (e.g., ASCP, NCA, AMT). Contractor personnel must provide proof of board certification prior to providing services to the 81 MDG and maintain their certification throughout
their employment. Contractor personnel registered or certified by national/medical associations shall continue to meet the minimum standards for CME to remain current as prescribed in Chapter 4, AFI 41-117, Medical Service Officer Education, 25 Mar 15. CME hours will be reported to the Medial Director, annually on the first normal duty day in January for the previous calendar year. Periodic CME may be conducted at the MTF and will be available, at no cost, should the Contractor personnel desire to attend. Attendance will be at the discretion of the Flight Commander/Medical Director.
