Job Description
The Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant collects patient specimens, prepares samples for testing, and enters required information into the Laboratory Information System. This role also supports reference lab testing, provides reports and information as needed, and performs assigned Point-of-Care (POC) testing.
Responsibilities include:
Performing venipuncture and collecting patient and occasional employee blood samples in accordance with safety guidelines.
Conducting waived and Point-of-Care (POC) testing, entering and verifying results in the LIS.
Processing inpatient and outpatient lab orders, collecting specimens, and ensuring accurate documentation.
Preparing, packaging, and sending specimens to reference laboratories, and scanning results into the appropriate systems.
Providing professional customer service to patients, families, physicians, and departments.
Assisting with inventory and general clerical duties.
Maintaining up-to-date phlebotomy skills, equipment knowledge, and safety practices.
Obtaining additional non-blood specimens (e.g., throat, nasopharyngeal, urine) as needed.
Remaining proficient in laboratory systems such as Athena, 4Medica, and Meditech.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma and an approved phlebotomy program or 4-5 years relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
Related Work Experience: 2 years previous pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred.
Licensure/Certification: PBT(ASCP) and/or CLPIB (NCA) programs MA certification- preferred.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
General knowledge of phlebotomy procedures and practices.
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Ability to provide compassionate patient care and orientation.
Computer and office experience is preferred but not required.

What We're Seeking:
We seek a full-time 1st Shift Lab Assistant who supports the Lab Manager by performing waste treatment duties, maintaining data logs, ensuring safety compliance, and assisting in training. They test materials, monitor chemical inventories, and ensure equipment operates correctly. Strong communication skills, physical stamina, and attention to detail are essential..
This 1st Shift full-time role must be able to work Monday-Friday!
Starting Pay Range: $56,000 to $75,000 Annually based on experience.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Capable of performing all duties of a waste treatment operator
Assist Lab Manager in supervisory duties such as hiring, overseeing training, performance evaluations, addressing employee concerns, and administering disciplinary action as needed
Maintains a state of Illinois Class K operator's license
Assists in maintaining and recording all data logged by the operators
Enforces safety requirements and ensures all new employees are properly trained
Assists in ensuring operators complete duties in their daily priority logs
Works with the lab manager and the Metal Finishing Manager to establish weekend operating schedules
Assists in preparing technical reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information relative to all process chemistry
Tests chemicals and physical properties of materials used in processing tanks
Performs coating weight analysis of phosphated panels
Assists in monitoring chemical inventories and communicates any discrepancies to the Lab Manager
Conducts quantitative and qualitative analysis
Represents the lab during quality and environmental audits and assists with experimenting with new process chemistry
Analyze and summarize information related to all process chemistry
Ensures proper operation of equipment by completing preventative maintenance requirements; troubleshooting malfunctions; communicating with Maintenance for repairs
Maintain a clean and safe work environment
Practice safe work habits, following outlined policies and procedures
Operate a forklift, following all required safety and operational procedures
Be aware of SWD Inc. Company's policy and procedures, including the quality system as defined by ISO-9001, ISO-14001, and ISO-17025 and outlined in SWD Inc.'s quality, environmental and laboratory systems policy, and procedure manuals.
Qualifications:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Job Duties
Understand PASL services, operations, and testing methods for waterborne pathogens
Basic understanding of field testing equipment and supplies
Receive and log in chemistry or microbiology samples
Prepare materials and reagents for processing chemistry or microbiology samples; record observations and measurements, and report results
Under direct supervision, provides analysis of the samples according to the standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Records sample location data and results in the database
Communicates accurate and timely results to clients and the sales team
Assists in the maintenance of quality system records to comply with accrediting agencies
Assists with ordering, receipt, inspection, and stocking of supplies
Performs lab maintenance, including, but not limited to:
Clean lab equipment and wash glassware, vials, and filters
Clean and store materials used for testing
Discard old chemistry or microbiology samples
Prepares reports as necessary
Education and Experience
A bachelors degree in Chemistry, Biology, or a related field is required
