POSITION INFORMATION:

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
Medical Laboratory Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist (MT, CLS):
Technologist must have a Bachelor of Science Degree
Technologist must have Medical Laboratory Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist generalist certification from a nationally recognized accrediting agency (ASCP, NCA, AMT etc.)
Technologist must have a minimum of two (2) years of laboratory experience
SERVICES:
Services shall be provided 40 hours per week to include rotating weekends and Federal holidays with flexible eight (8), ten (10) or twelve (12) hour tours.
The Chief Technologist, P&LMS (or designee) shall determine, regarding VA needs, the scheduled tour of duty.
Employees shall be given one-week notice of schedule changes.
Should occasionally overtime hours be required due to short staffing or increased workload, prior approval must be received by the CTVHCS P&LMS Chief Technologist or designee.
The Chief, P&LMS (or designee) shall determine, regarding VA needs, the frequency, and lengths of duty hours.
Technologists shall perform various clinical laboratory testing procedures in the General Clinical Laboratory in accordance with VA policies and procedures and the regulations of the medical staff bylaws of CTVHCS.
Technologists shall provide the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) (or designee) at and a two (2) week notice of all planned leave less than three (3) days to provide quality and timely patient care.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Is expected to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results.
Will perform, evaluate, interpret, correlate, and validate the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results.
Requires a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision.
Will be required to monitor quality control systems and measures.
Requires the ability to interpret and apply complex written instructions.
Must utilize basic knowledge of laboratory equipment and be able to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation.
May need to resolve problems encountered in the laboratory.
Must be able to communicate, consult, and interact with other members of the healthcare team, external relations, customer service, and patient education.
Will perform a broad range of laboratory procedures, including advanced and complex laboratory procedures. Must be able to recognize deviation from expected results and use scientific principles to analyze and correct problems.
Evaluate and solve problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis accounting for physiologic processes and requirements.
Maintain and document the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment. Use, calibrate, and identify malfunctions; repair and perform preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Troubleshoot issues with laboratory instruments and resolve problems. Diagnose deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction.
Perform and document quality control and quality assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement.
Identify discrepancies, solve problems, and present solutions.
Answer inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors that influence test results. Interpret results and suggest follow up test selection or procedures.
Must meet all acceptable quality and productivity standards as defined by Chief, P&LMS or designee.

Gross entry - Assisting with entering information provided by the Grossing Technician into the patient's electronic medical record.
Laboratory tasks related to receiving, organizing, and preparing patient tissue samples for microscopic evaluation by the Dermatopathologist. These include Correctly labeling completed slides and slide packaging and send-out.
Assisting with laboratory send-outs to include slide and block requests.
General lab maintenance to include slide and block organization and storage and Maintenance of CLIA required records and documentation.
Assistance with completing and maintaining all compliance related paperwork to include temperature and humidity information, chemical reagent log sheets, patient information logs, and quality assurance forms.
Adhering to all safety protocols.
Provides excellent customer service by greeting them in a competent and courteous, in person or on the telephone and answering or referring inquires.
Responsible for accurately and timely completing documentation using both Electronic Medical Record and any required paper documentation while ensuring patient confidentiality.
Ensures that blood/body fluids, biohazard materials, needle containers and potentially infectious waste are appropriately disposed of, according to infection control guidelines.

General lab maintenance to include slide and block organization and storage and Maintenance of CLIA required records and documentation.
Assistance with completing and maintaining all compliance related paperwork to include temperature and humidity information, chemical reagent log sheets, patient information logs, and quality assurance forms.
Adhering to all safety protocols.
