Work Environment

The laboratory environment involves working on samples for clinical trials without the need to work major holidays or interact with patients.

Job Summary/Basic Function
The primary job of all lab assistants is to be present in the lab so that the resources of the Geo-Graphics Lab are open and available to the university community.
Required Qualifications
The lab assistants must be geography majors at the time of hire. All lab assistants will have successfully completed GEOG 281 Maps and GIS with a B or better.
Lab assistants must have the following minimum grade point averages at the time of hire: 3.0 in the major, and 2.5 overall.
Lab assistants must be familiar with basic computer operations. At a minimum this includes knowledge of Excel and Word, how to find and start ArcGIS Pro, and basic Windows operations such as saving and printing files.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to students who have completed GEOG295 with a B or better.
Ability to explain to users the vLab environment that all Lab computers connect to.
Ability to instruct users to connect to their MU OneDrive online storage (including reasons for doing so).
If new hires do not have all the above skills, they will be trained
Job Duties
Routine tasks must be learned by all lab assistants. These include the maintenance of computer files and lab equipment. Lab assistants will ensure that students use the equipment and supplies in a nondestructive and non-wasteful manner. Problems will be brought to the attention of the professor in charge. Lab assistants are responsible for ensuring the lab is always neat and tidy. Light cleaning including dusting and wiping down the white board shall be done on a regular basis. Any lab assistant unable to meet his/her scheduled time for any reason must notify the professor in charge in advance of that scheduled time. It is the lab assistant's responsibility to find another lab assistant who can substitute. Repeated failure to meet scheduled times, or to notify in advance of an absence, or falsification of time sheets recoding hours worked will result in the dismissal of that lab assistant, and in the hiring of a replacement assistant. Special projects are often carried out in the lab, either related to a professor's research or designed to improve the lab facilities or organization. Lab assistants may be asked to help with such projects. Promptly reporting hours worked in E-Time. If applicable, work one-on-one with students that need additional help with their geography classes.

The Stewart Laboratory in Penn State's Department of Biology seeks a Research Technologist of Life Sciences (Senior Professional) to support research in fishes.
The successful candidate will maintain lab supplies and equipment, manage and oversee fish colonies, contribute to research projects, assist in maintaining lab safety protocols of staff and student, investigates and evaluates research methods, advising faculty and researchers on optimal use of methodology and equipment, collect and analyze data, summarizing the results for dissemination in manuscripts, training PhD students and Postdocs in the lab in equipment operation and research techniques, and provide constructive feedback to both trainees and the PI on ongoing experiments.

Job Description
The Laboratory Operational Assistant is primarily responsible for performing duties within the central laboratory related to inventory, administrative reporting tasks, management of samples, manual processing and handling of samples, and other miscellaneous tasks as assigned.
Laboratory Operational Assistant responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Level I - Minimum
Under the direction of the laboratory management, ensures that lab supplies are ordered and stocked.
Maintains inventory documentation and communicates to laboratory management when there are delays in supply delivery to the lab.
Works within the Purchase Ordering system and communicates to administrative personnel to ensure all paperwork is available for accounts payable.
Follow-up communication with vendors on all pending incoming orders.
Always maintain supply areas in audit-ready conditions.
Fast and accurate process of supplies from receiving to shelves.
Maintain accurate accountability of inventory within the assigned database.
Ensures proper handling of receipts and purchase orders.
Providing support to the Reporting Officer as needed. This may include receipt of client calls for reprinting of reports, executing administrative tasks associated with result cleanings as indicated in query management tool, and other reporting responsibilities as needed.
Provides support to Sample Management as needed, including unpacking, accessioning, flow and storage of samples, and archiving.
Retrieve and provide samples to laboratory as requested.
Perform manual processing of samples in the laboratory, including but not limited to, sample aliquoting, and special handling.
Adhere to policies and protocols in the lab.
Ability to read, interpret, and comply with documents such as internal SOPs, operating and maintenance instructions, and company policies. Perform housecleaning and laboratory cleaning as required.
Work closely with and communicate with other lab assistants to complete daily activities efficiently.
Level II - Fully meets the qualifications of the Level I plus the following:
Perform manual processing of samples in the laboratory, including but not limited to, PBMC isolation, sample aliquoting, and special handling.
Crosstrain appropriate personnel in qualified job tasks.
Level III - Fully meets the qualifications of the Level I and II plus the following:
Under the direction of the laboratory technologists and laboratory supervisor, ensures that lab testing is performed according to established global protocols, timelines and established procedures (SOPs) to generate high-quality, error-free, analytical results.
Perform other laboratory-related tasks such as sample sorting, archiving, instrument maintenance etc. as directed by the laboratory management.
Demonstrate leadership and problem-solving skills through supervision, coaching, mentoring of others as required
Qualifications

Requirements
What Makes You a Great Fit
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science;
2-3 years of professional hands-on laboratory experience, preferably within environmental testing;
Experience with analytical techniques including ion chromatography (IC), flow injection analysis (FIA), segmented flow analysis (SFA), spectrophotometry (Spec), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and gravimetric (grav) methods strongly preferred;
Demonstrated proficiency with laboratory instrumentation, standardized testing methods, and interpretation of analytical data across multiple techniques;
Experience with LIMS and/or other laboratory management software strongly preferred;
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat.

Your Schedule and The Fine Print
Full-time position following a Monday through Friday schedule of 6 AM to 2:30 PM, with rotating weekend and holiday coverage;
Flexibility to work outside of normal hours to support business needs and deadlines.
