The role of the lab assistant/specimen processor at NMMC is to receive, sort, identify, process, and distribute specimens to all technical areas. The processor will answer phone calls, process and/or distribute faxes, and other clerical duties as assigned by the lab manager. When needed, the processor will assist in phlebotomy. The processor will routinely process send out samples and pathologies according to laboratory protocols and specimen requirements. The lab assistant/specimen processor will also perform waived testing as needed. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Receive samples into the laboratory from phlebotomy and nursing staff. * Receive samples and supplies from materials department and couriers. * Process samples according to testing protocols using centrifugation, as needed. * Distributes samples in a timely manner to correct laboratory departments * Answer and direct all incoming calls to the appropriate person or department. * Demonstrate courtesy, respect, enthusiasm and a positive attitude in work situations. * Monitor sample deliveries to ensure timely processing and delivery of specimens. * Recognize and record discrepancies and communicate errors to Lab Manager and/or Lead Technologist, notifying phlebotomy or collectors as needed. * Investigate and resolve mistakes and other specimen problems. * Label appropriate aliquot tubes and transfer as defined by policy; store samples at the appropriate temperature. * Performs venipunctures and skin punctures per established protocols. * Assists with scanning results and related forms into patient charts as necessary. * Logs and packages pathology specimens for transport. * Verify patient specimens such as blood, urine, and other body fluids with requisitions or labels, making certain that information matches, and the specimen is correct. * Prepare, package and send specimens to outside locations such as reference laboratories. * Assist in the monitoring of specimen turnaround times as well as monitoring timed draw samples. * Recognizes and reports all patient and employee safety issues. * Maintains educational training/professional development and competency. * Maintains confidentiality. * Performs pathology charges. * Orders central and office supply items. * Stocks shelves, and phlebotomy baskets, as needed. * Attends pertinent in-services to effectively perform job duties.
