Job Duties:
Performs various laboratory tests and procedures while adhering to standard operating procedures on patient specimens to assist in the diagnosis, study and treatment, or prevention of disease.
May perform tests including but not limited to standardized and semi-routine biological, chemical, hematological, immunological, immunohematological, microbiological, and serological tests in a research or clinical laboratory.
May serve as key operator for implementation of new equipment and procedures.
In complex cases, evaluates all information and determines whether test results should be released, repeated, or referred to a pathologist. Refers abnormal or unexpected results to the appropriate individual(s).
May serve on laboratory's safety committee; write and maintain safety and infection control policies and procedures, and ensure correct Safety Data Sheets are maintained.
May teach medical technology theory and techniques while providing guidance to lower level technologists; develop teaching plans and student assessment tools; prepare written examinations.
May perform venipuncture or capillary puncture to obtain blood specimen.
Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Blood Bank specific experience
Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or a chemical, physical or biological science.
Other bachelor's degree will be accepted if graduated from an accredited school and science and math coursework meet requirements of certifying agency.
Bachelor's degree may be waived for a medical technologist who was ASCP certified in the years prior to the bachelor's degree requirement by ASCP and a HEW/HHS technologist certified by Health and Human Services.
Certified by one of the following accreditation agencies: MT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT), MT (HHS or HEW), MT (AAB), generalist or categorical if applicable.
Two years experience required.

As an accredited public health department, we're seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position of Clinical Laboratory Technologist to join the Division of Medical/Clinical Services, Public Health Laboratory located in Decatur, GA.
Under broad supervision, performs high complexity laboratory tests for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. Analyzes specimens, interprets, records and reports results.
The incumbent is expected to perform highly technical duties within the Laboratory-Emergency Preparedness & Response - Molecular Biology & Biological Threat (MB/BT) Unit.
This is a GRANT FUNDED position and is subject to available grant funds.
Job Responsibilities
Perform a wide range of laboratory tests using molecular technologies that pertain to detection and identification of biological agents in clinical, bacteriological and environmental samples to support COVID-19 pandemic response, emergency response, outbreak investigations, and routine surveillance programs. Biological agents include, but are not limited to, SARS-CoV-2, influenza, mumps, and measles viruses, as well as biothreat agents.
Assist in validation and analysis of new molecular assays at GPHL.
Assist in writing and/or updating SOPs, as needed.
Perform QC on stock reagents.
Perform analysis of proficiency testing samples, necessary for continued support of the state emergency preparedness and response activities and sustaining federal funding.
Work and coordinate with staff in the MB/BT unit by responding to emergency COVID-19 response testing, unknown environmental sample incidents, testing for influenza, testing for Ebola, conducting select agent rule outs, and performing routine diagnostic tests in the MB/BT lab.
Along with Chemical Threat and MB/BT staff, support the 24/7 state emergency preparedness and response plan by providing coverage when on-call during after-hours, weekend, and holiday hours.
Check inventory and order supplies.
Perform and document preventative maintenance for instruments and equipment according to schedule.
Troubleshoot and document any problems with instruments or reagents.
Adhere to all protocols and procedure manuals without deviation.
Maintain a clean, uncluttered work area and offer assistance to other technologists and units when primary duties are met.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate degree in a related science area from an accredited college or university, certification as a Medical Technologist, MT (ASCP), and three (3) years of job-related science experience; or Associate degree and two (2) years of experience at the lower level Medical/Clinical Specialist 2 (LSP011) or equivalent position.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related science area from an accredited college or university AND Two years of experience in a clinical laboratory AND Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) by a nationally accredited certifying agency such as American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the American Medical Technologists (AMT), the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA), the American Association of Bioanalysts (ABB), or another agency approved by the Department.

Successful completion of a full course of study which meets all academic requirements for a bachelor's degree in medical technology from an accredited college or university; OR
Successful completion of three years of academic study (a minimum of 135 quarter hours or equivalent) in an accredited college or university and the successful completion of a course of training of at least 12 months in a school of medical technology accredited by an agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the U.S. Department of Education; OR
