Job Role Summary
The Histotechnician prepares tissue specimens for surgical pathology examination. This includes evaluating the acceptability of the specimens, properly embedding the processed tissue, cutting/sectioning the specimens, and staining/coverslipping the slides using automated or manual methods. The histotechnician also performs special staining as requested by the pathologists. The histotechnician works closely with the Pathology residents, PA students, and medical staff to ensure optimal specimen quality.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Prepares tissue specimens appropriately for surgical pathology examination, including embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping
Prepares and evaluates reagents and solutions. Ensures sufficient supply inventory for the section.
Operates and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment, documenting quality control activities and minor repairs.
Evaluates the acceptability of specimens, slide preparations, and stains. Labels slides and verifies accuracy of patient information on the slides. Documents problems when necessary.
Maintains surgical pathology slide, block, and specimen storage for the required retention period
Assists laboratory management in training/competency of new employees, medical staff, residents, and PA students
Functions as a self-starter, arrives to work on time and on scheduled days, begins work promptly
Follows section/departmental policies and procedures to ensure minimal errors during all phases of testing
Completes assignments/mandatories according to policies and procedures, with complete documentation and within the designated time frames, including, but not limited to : Procedure and policy reviews, read and signs, annual TB testing and flu shots, section competencies, proficiency testing, Eskenazi Health annual education
Effectively communicates with team members, laboratory management, physicians, students, and other hospital staff. Ensures that laboratory management is informed of existing and/or potential problems that may require decisions or intervention to resolve.

Job Requirements
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Histology or other related life science and one year of relevant experience in histopathology, or at least 60 semester hours of academic college credit (including 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry) and one year of relevant experience in histopathology. Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists HT(ASCP) preferred or equivalent histology experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of principals, concepts, and methodology sufficient to perform the full spectrum of histologic preparation of specimens for microscopic evaluation
Knowledge of staining procedures, fixatives, dehydrants, clearing agents, filtration techniques, and preparation techniques common to histology laboratories
Knowledge of laboratory safety including standard precautions for handling hazardous chemicals and solutions
Knowledge of CAP/CLIA/TJC/ISDH regulations as they pertain to histopathology

Business Requirements and Processes:

* Develop and document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the application.

Support Team Participation and Issue Resolution:
* Provide ongoing support for LabVantage application including the reporting, management, and resolution of support issues.
* Coaching and mentoring of system users, sharing key learning and standard processes to the global LabVantage community to increase their system knowledge, and the identification of transferrable work processes between sites.
Inspection Support:
* The candidate will be part of the team that will provide answers to questions from inspections, audits, and other formal and informal assessments that impact globally owned applications and their associated workflows.
Basic Requirements

Job Description
The hand-held Raman testing laboratory analysts in the Analytical Quality Control Operations (AQCO) organization will serve as a technical resource to execute material identification test method validations and transfers, to support installation of hand-held Raman applications in Quality Control testing labs and materials receipt areas. The hand-held Raman testing analyst has primary responsibility for executing approved protocols for method validation and transfer, generating the data necessary to complete studies, training analysts in receiving laboratories, and participating in investigations of protocol deviations or protocol execution issues. The analyst may also participate in generating documentation, including methods, protocols, reports and change controls in support of these activities. The hand-held Raman testing analyst should have familiarity with basic laboratory operations and must be capable of operating in a cGMP laboratory environment.
Execute approved protocols for method validation and transfer, with accurate documentation of execution steps and data in an electronic notebook or other electronic execution system.
Provide hands-on training and oversight to receiving laboratories before and during method transfers, including troubleshooting for execution difficulties.
Assist with investigations into protocol or method execution errors or difficulties in successful testing.
Author methods, protocols, and reports to support new materials or transfer existing methods to new laboratories.
Technically review validation or transfer data generated by other analysts.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related physical sciences field, or at least 1-3 years of laboratory experience in a cGMP pharmaceutical Quality Control laboratory.
Fundamental knowledge of requirements in a cGMP environment.

Managerial and Leadership duties and responsibilities:
Supervises the day to day production and nonproduction activities of the local departmental employees.
Directly monitors the quality of testing services provided by employees under his/her supervision.
Assigns appropriately trained personnel and ensures sufficient number of staff are available to complete the workload.
Supervision:
Schedules department personnel appropriately to match the demands of the daily workflow with in the supervised area.
Provides direct supervision to employees, including assignments, technical and behavioral performance counseling, and troubleshooting.
Schedules and supervises all non-production activities and obligations of her/his area, such as validations, surveys, etc.
Provides support as required to the department manager to assist in the fulfillment of his/her responsibilities, including acting as manager, upon delegation, during absences.
Performance Monitoring and Evaluation:
Assures quality and timely performance of both production and non-production activities under supervision. o Reports performance and results against targets and global standards.
Ensures regulatory compliance within his/her supervision.
Communicates all production and non-production standards, guidelines and information to the supervised staff.
Ensures on-time delivery of performance reports (PT, QC/PM, Internal and External QC) and responses to inquiries from other functional areas. o Participates in and supports client visits, audits and inquiries, as necessary, to ensure complete fulfillment of requests and interests.
Personnel:
Recruits, trains, and contributes to retention efforts of employees.
Conducts technical training and development of staff as needed.
Supports the departmental manager in assessing and meeting the resource needs.
Supports the development of plans to meet future resource needs.
Evaluates the performance of employees.
Works with department manager to establish training plans for the supervised staff.
Supports the manager in employee evaluations and development plans.
Essential External Client-related Job Duties:
Supports marketing and sales as needed in their efforts to meet specific client requests for testing services.
Other:
Perform other duties as required, including testing of patient samples in areas of competence.
Experience and Education:
Minimum Required:
Earned a Bachelor's degree and has had 4 years of experience in a laboratory following clinical training; prior supervisory or management experience is a plus.
A licensed physician or has earned a doctoral degree in a biological, chemical, or physical science and after graduation, has had at least two years of post-baccalaureate pertinent laboratory training and experience equivalent to that of an ASCP certified medical technologist, in a clinical laboratory having a director at the doctoral level.
OR
Earned a Master of Arts or science degree in a biological, chemical, or physical science and subsequent to graduation has had at least two years of post-baccalaureate pertinent laboratory experience and training equivalent to that of an ASCP certified medical technologist, of which not less than two years have been spent working in the designated specialty in a clinical laboratory having a director at the doctoral level.
OR
Meets qualifications for a technologist and has at least four years of post-baccalaureate pertinent laboratory experience equivalent to that of an American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) certified medical technologist, of which not less than two years has been spent working in a clinical laboratory having a director at the doctoral level.

Job Description
The hand-held Raman testing laboratory analysts in the Analytical Quality Control Operations (AQCO) organization will serve as a technical resource to execute material identification test method validations and transfers, to support installation of hand-held Raman applications in Quality Control testing labs and materials receipt areas. The hand-held Raman testing analyst has primary responsibility for executing approved protocols for method validation and transfer, generating the data necessary to complete studies, training analysts in receiving laboratories, and participating in investigations of protocol deviations or protocol execution issues. The analyst may also participate in generating documentation, including methods, protocols, reports and change controls in support of these activities. The hand-held Raman testing analyst should have familiarity with basic laboratory operations and must be capable of operating in a cGMP laboratory environment.
Execute approved protocols for method validation and transfer, with accurate documentation of execution steps and data in an electronic notebook or other electronic execution system.
Provide hands-on training and oversight to receiving laboratories before and during method transfers, including troubleshooting for execution difficulties.
Assist with investigations into protocol or method execution errors or difficulties in successful testing.
Author methods, protocols, and reports to support new materials or transfer existing methods to new laboratories.
Technically review validation or transfer data generated by other analysts.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related physical sciences field, or at least 1-3 years of laboratory experience in a cGMP pharmaceutical Quality Control laboratory.
Fundamental knowledge of requirements in a cGMP environment.

Associate degree requires certification (NCA, AMT, ASCP, HEW, and CLA) within 12 months of employment. Failure to achieve would result in downgrade to Lab Assistant II position until certification is achieved or loss of employment, dependent on business need.
