Job DescriptionDescription:
This position provides research, data analysis and operational support to and laboratory members for research projects involving symbiont technology, citrus greening disease, cotton leafroll dwarf virus and other projects as assigned.
Essential Job Functions
Conduct research as directed by a supervisor, including:
Executing laboratory and/or field research, and interpreting the resulting data
Maintaining knowledge of relevant scientific literature
Maintain biological material such as plants or microorganism collections
Maintain laboratory notebooks and electronic records
Assisting with the preparation of reports, manuscripts and presentations
Operates with complete oversight by the PI, research scientists, and/or specialists in the lab
Training colleagues on techniques/equipment
Give presentations
Has the capacity to operate semi-autonomously with moderate oversight by the PI, research scientists, and/or specialists in the lab
Design experiments to support questions/hypotheses from PI/supervisors
Collaborate with principal investigators (PIs) in formulating research questions and hypotheses
Has the capacity to operate completely autonomously with minimal oversight by the PI, research scientists, and/or specialists in the lab
Participate in professional development activities, which may include:
Regular meetings regarding the progress and direction of research with the supervisor or in group meetings
Participating in Institute seminars and events
Participating in activities to develop communication, management and other soft skills
Participating in BTI committees/societies
Attending conferences
May perform some of the duties of a lab manager if there is no such position in the group such as, oversee the maintenance of research databases and the organization of research files for the entire lab
Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
Required Experience and Knowledge
Prior experience with symbiont technology and making symbiont technology plasmids is required. Prior experience maintaining hemipteran insect colonies for vector biology research is required. Prior experience working in a research laboratory or group is required, as well as the ability to work independently.
Prior experience submitting documents to support federal field trial permits to EPA and USDA is required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
No direct supervisory responsibilities. May provide mentoring to undergraduate student workers.
Communication Skills
Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills required. Ability to maintain accurate lab notebooks and electronic records in English. Ability to draft publications and sections of grant proposals. Ability to speak effectively one-on-one or in small groups, and to present information to groups internal and external to the Institute.
Computer Skills
The position requires the proficiency in basic business applications, and may require use of scientific programs.
Travel
Occasional travel to off-site meetings or conferences. Occasional fieldwork may be required.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Some physical exertion may be required such as long periods of standing, recurring bending and occasional lifting. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. The work is often conducted in a laboratory setting with regular use of chemicals or equipment/materials requiring use of personal protective equipment and routine precautions. May require occasional early morning, evening or weekend work.

Position OverviewUnited Health Service (UHS) is seeking a Laboratory Technical Specialist. The Laboratory Technical Specialist has direct responsibilities for the technical operations of their section at both Wilson Medical Center and Binghamton General Hospital. Oversees and coordinates the daily technical activities of his/her respective section, and when necessary, functions as a technologist. The Technical Specialists is the technical expert of the section and works under the direction of the Core Laboratory Manager, the Administrative Director, and the Medical Director. All duties are performed in a timely manner according to UHS's Laboratory and Departmental Policies and Procedures, New York State Department of Health Regulations, CAP, and CDC Blood and Body Fluids Procedures, and Infection Control Policies. Priority is given to STAT testing and to tests that require immediate processing.

Job Responsibilities
Provides input for daily schedules and assignment of duties to section personnel. Ensures that laboratory tests are performed according to department protocols and are reported in a timely manner.
Ensures that systems are in place to provide test results that are valid and accurate and maintains adequate quality control measures. Performs daily patient result and quality control reviews and takes appropriate corrective action.
Supports and models compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and standards in compliance with licensure requirements and UHS and Laboratory Policy.
Provides input for annual goals and objectives that are reflective and supportive of the laboratory and hospital goals and objectives.
Provides input for annual supply, personnel and capital budgets in conjunction with the Laboratory Management. Upon final approval, supports the operation of their section within budget limits.
Assures performance and documentation of quality control, quality improvement and instrument maintenance activities. Prepares recommendations for improvements in the section's procedures and performance.
Develops, prepares and maintains policies and procedures which apply to his/her respective department in conjunction with Laboratory Management.
Provides input for performance appraisals on all employees in the section, based on UHS and department developed performance standards. May participate in the evaluation and recommendations of candidates for employment.
Participates in the clinical and didactic educational programs for CLT and CCLT students.

Budget Title: Instructional Support Technician (SL-3)
Salary: $75,000 - $80,000 (commensurate with experience)
The Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science seeks an outstanding candidate for the position of Instructional Support Technician. Providing skilled, specialized assistance to faculty, staff and students, the Instructional Support Technician plays a critical function in support of the College's educationally related programs or projects. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
* Provide support and guidance in the safe operation and maintenance of the College's academic and research laboratories
* Work closely with the faculty to ensure that academic laboratories adequately support the engineering and computer science curricula of the College
* Design, set up, test, and validate experimental setups for lab sessions as needed (both for traditional and online programs)
* Operate and maintain equipment that includes 3D printers and machining equipment
* Provide consulting services in support of student and faculty projects
* Provide mentoring, supervision, technical advice and instruction in the use of equipment and materials, and safety protocols to student projects and competition teams (i.e. SAE, ASME, etc.)
* Assist in procurement procedures and install needed equipment and supplies as required
* Develop and conduct workshops on technical topics relevant to the College's educational mission
* Initiate, propose, develop content or projects in keeping with the educational mission of the team/college
* Serve on college and university-wide committees as needed
* Manage student staffing as defined by director
* Manage and provide oversight of the daily operations of labs
