Provides comprehensive infant feeding services to families through inpatient and outpatient services. Develops, markets, and implements plans for the program. Increases awareness of the lactation program and develop educational materials for use with various audiences. Uses clinical expertise in assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient and family needs and participates in decision-making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to advance the patient plan of care, achieve outcomes and enhance operational efficiency. The nurse adheres to the ANA Scope and Standards of Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.

+ Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN).

+ Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) preferred.

+ Requires current state of Indiana license as Registered Nurse.

+ Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.

+ Requires certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (I . B . L . C . E .) or be certified within one year of hire.

+ Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Lactation Consultant at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

* The Lactation Consultant must provide assessment, intervention, and education to childbearing families choosing to breastfeed their infants, in all areas of the Medical Center.
* Responsible for actively promoting breastfeeding and helping families achieve their infant feeding goals.
* Supports programs already in place and assists with the development and implementation of standards of care and guidelines for assisting breastfeeding families in all areas of the organization where they might be served (emergency department, OB/GYN, family health centers, employee health, pediatrics or in-patient units).
* Collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary team members.
* Adheres to the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding endorsed by Baby-Friendly USA, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the World Health Organization and UNICEF, and the New Jersey OB Licensing Regulations.
* Document fully all teaching and interventions provided to breastfeeding families.
* Assist with nursing staff competencies and other team member education regarding breastfeeding.
* Assist and support the education of lactation interns.
* Assist with prenatal hospital tours of the Maternity Unit as required during shift.
* Provide prenatal education, including childbirth, breastfeeding, and infant care, in prenatal classes, as needed.

Qualifications

* Current and valid NJ Nursing license is required
* Active American Heart Association (AHA) BLS/CPR certification is required
* Minimum of 2 years of OB nursing experience required
* International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in current active status is required
* Bachelor of Science in Nursing and/or Master of Science in Nursing preferred
