The Lagunitas Brewing Company began on a kitchen stove in Northern California in 1993 and has been crafting hop-forward beers ever since.
The brewery was founded in 1993 by Tony Magee in Lagunitas, California, and moved a year later to nearby Petaluma, California, after they quickly outgrew their original rural West Marin location.
1995 IPA is Born To stand out among the sea of Pale Ales in Bay Area bars in the mid-90s, Tony developed a new-world spin on an old-world style: the India Pale Ale, which he shortened to IPA. Palates at the time couldn’t handle the hoppiness, but Tony had a hunch that this was the next big thing…
On April 9, 2012, Lagunitas announced plans for a new Chicago-based brewery equipped with a 250 barrel brew house which will also have a 600,000 US bbl (700,000 hL) capacity.
The brewery announced a $9.5 million expansion slated to begin early 2012 which increased its brewing capacity to 600,000 US bbl (700,000 hL).
2014 Petaluma, Chicago, Seattle and… As a native Chicagoan, Tony was looking for a way to return home.
Since it opened its Chicago brewery in 2014, Lagunitas Brewing Co. has become the largest craft beer producer in the city.
Lagunitas sold the remaining fifty percent in 2017.
