Lake County became a legal entity on July 27, 1887 when it was created out of portions of Orange and Sumter counties.
Walt Disney's parents were married in a small town named Kismet, which no longer exists, on December 27, 1887.
Among the businesses was the Hotel Kismet, likely the newly married Elias Disney and Flora Call stayed after their marriage in Kismet on New Year’s Day, 1888.
Elliott’s Florida Encyclopedia or Pocket Directory, which was published in 1889, gave even more specific directions, stating that Indian Springs was located on Lake Benton, and on the line of the J.T.&K.W. Railway.
In 1890, the first census was formed and there were 8,034 people in the county.
Contracts were let for the construction of the first hard surface roads in Lake County in 1915.
In 1922 the county floated a $250,000 Bond Issue and built a new courthouse which is now known as the Historic Courthouse.
1922 - The city changed its form of government when the new City Charter established a City Commission.
1926 - The present City Hall was built.
William Kennedy also mentioned an Indian Springs in his History of Lake County, Florida, which was published in 1929.
1930 - The first Watermelon Festival was held.
1938 - Work on Venetian Gardens was started as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project.
