The Deputy Sheriff is also responsible for arresting persons suspected of violating ordinances and statutes, including the use of physical force as necessary to subdue suspects. A person in this position will interview offenders and victims of crimes; appear in court to testify on behalf of the County; serve warrants, and summons; speak to organized groups or the general public about various law enforcement activities; and coordinate special education programs. YOU MUST BE CURRENTLY WORKING AS A FULL-TIME CERTIFIED POLICE OFFICER. * Available to work all shifts, including holidays and weekends. * Currently employed as a Certified Police Officer; and, * Good standing in their department as of the date of certification by the Merit Commission; and, * Two years of full-time, continuous experience with a law enforcement agency, the definition of which includes, but is not limited to, authority to make arrests and carry firearms; and, * Successfully completed Illinois Basic Police Officer Training, or Basic Police Officer Training Program which can be transferred and accepted by the Illinois State Training Board. For good reason shown, including but not limited to when necessary to comply with federal or state laws and regulations, the Commission may consider lateral candidates who are not currently employed by law enforcement agencies at the time of application or certification. Your day will consist of a variety of maintenance and traffic tasks related to the preservation and upkeep of County highways, bridges, drainage structures, other highway features, and DOT facilities. This position performs semi-skilled work in operating tools and highway maintenance equipment. In addition, this position performs essential snow and ice control operations and will be on a 24 hour on-call status. The regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 am until 3:00 pm. Depending on the assignment, the incumbent may perform a combination of some or all the following duties, and perform related duties as assigned, this list of duties is not intended to be all-inclusive: * Operate a variety of highway maintenance equipment such as trucks, pavement marking equipment, snowplow trucks with plows and salt spreaders, tractors, mowers, chippers, compressors, jack hammers, generators, etc. * Wash, grease, and assist in maintenance/servicing equipment including minor repairs and preventive maintenance * Repair, replace, and patch asphalt and concrete surfaces and fill in aggregate shoulder ruts * Load and spread salt and deicing materials; plow and remove snow * Direct and control traffic during road maintenance * Remove and dispose of trash, dead animals, and other debris found on highways * Repair and clean culverts, drains, storm sewers, ditches and other drainage facilities * Trim and chip trees and shrubs * Work from ladders or scaffolding * Perform difficult physical labor and work under extreme weather conditions * All duties are performed in accordance with the County safety code and established safe work practices * Ability to follow directions * Effectively problem solve * Work well both individually and on a team * Ability to work long hours day or night * Strong communication skills * Some knowledge of road maintenance equipment, tools, and materials EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS * Completion of a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) equivalent * Must possess a Class B Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes * Class A Preferred * Requires a satisfactory driving record PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE POSITION * The ability to perform difficult physical labor and to regularly lift and/or carry objects weighing 25 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds is required. * The position is exposed to extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions; extreme noise levels; animals/wildlife; vibration; fumes and/or noxious odors; traffic; moving machinery; electrical shock; heights and other extreme hazards. Informs the public about the laws regarding animals, bites and strays. * Issues violation notices, warnings and tickets as required. * Receives training in the tools used for animal control and thereafter is responsible for proper utilization and care of these tools, including tranquilizing guns and medications. * Responsible for maintaining equipment, uniforms and vehicles in good working condition. * Prepares activity reports and records of inspections, investigations, transactions and correspondence. * Investigates complaints involving possible violations, offers advice on solutions, and makes follow-up inspections. * Offers solutions and follow up on corrections of ordinance and code violations. * Makes reasonable and accurate interpretations of statutes and ordinances applicable to responsibilities. * Educates the public on environmental health issues and the public health rationale for recommendations. * Formulates goals and objectives, establishes appropriate timelines/deadlines and balances his or her workload when involved in multiple projects. * Acts in concert with the Department of Agriculture in matters relating to livestock and other domestic animals. * Prepares and submits specimens suspected of rabies or other zoonoses, including West Nile specimens to the appropriate laboratory. * Sets humane traps for animals when appropriate. * Assists the public, community service officers, police departments, Lake County Sheriff, Lake County Forest Preserve Rangers and co-workers with impoundment and release of animals and maintains accurate records of these transactions. * Processes telephone inquiries and complaints from the public, other agencies and Health Department staff regarding strays, and relinquished, biting, and wild animals. * Assists in the transfer of impounded animals to other animal control/adoption facilities. * As required and assigned, acts as radio dispatcher, dispatching wardens to appropriate locations based upon complaints or requests from municipalities, the Sheriff's Department, or private citizens. * Compiles/enters and updates programmatic data for animal bites and animal bite investigations and reports. * Demonstrates excellent customer service by providing program and agency information as requested to internal and external customers. * Provides telephone answering and reception duties as assigned, or necessary. * Processes rabies registrations as required and assigned, assists in maintaining safe and sanitary animal housing areas. * Assists at vaccination or microchip clinics. * Performs other duties assigned. * Requires a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate. * Experience in handling animals and/or enforcing regulations is preferred. * Requires a valid driver's license with appropriate classification and a satisfactory driving record. * Requires ability to be licensed by the Department of Professional Regulation State of Illinois Certified Euthanasia Technician within 1 year of hire if not already licensed. * While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to lift at least fifty pounds, stand, walk, use hands and arms to operate tools and equipment.
