In 1857, only two years after the completion of railroads connecting Chicago to the string of towns stretching north along the shore of Lake Michigan, the city and the college of Lake Forest were simultaneously established 30 miles north of Chicago.
Lake Forest College was founded in 1857 by Reverend Robert W. Patterson as a Presbyterian alternative to the Methodist Northwestern University in Evanston.
Their Presbyterian founders hired Almerin Hotchkiss to draw up plans for a small, bucolic city with the school as its hub, and Lake Forest Academy opened to four boys in 1858, in the town's first building.
In 1869 Ferry Hall, a girls' preparatory school and junior college, opened as a division of the university.
In 1876 Mary Eveline Smith Farwell started Lake Forest College, a coeducational division of the university, under the leadership of the Reverend Patterson.
Their Presbyterian founders hired Almerin Hotchkiss to draw up plans for a small, bucolic city with the school as its hub, and Lake Forest Academy opened to four boys in 1858, in the town's first building. It reopened in 1876 to both men and women, focused increasingly on the liberal arts, and grew steadily over the next several decades.
In 1878, College Hall (now Young Hall) was built following a fire that destroyed the former hotel being used for classes.
In 1890 Lake Forest established a relationship with the Chicago College of Dental Surgery, Chicago's first dental school, to serve as its dental department.
The Lake Forest School of Music opened as a division of the university in 1916, incorporating and extending the courses in music hitherto given in other departments.
TriBeta was founded in 1922 at Oklahoma City University by Doctor Frank G. Brooks and a group of his students.
BIOS, the quarterly journal of Beta Beta Beta Biological Society, was founded in 1930.
Biennial national conventions of student and faculty members began in that year and in 1930 the society journal, BIOS, began publishing student research, articles of interest to biologists, and society news.

Though their founders envisioned them as adjoined institutions, the college and city serve different needs: while the city of Lake Forest remains among the nation's wealthiest, 85 percent of the college's 1,270 students received financial assistance in the 2001–2 academic year.
In March 2010, the college received $7 million from alumna Grace Groner.
