Lake Junaluska company history timeline

1913

On June 25, 1913, the first conference took place on the new Assembly grounds - the Second General Missionary Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

Steeped in Wesleyan heritage, Lake Junaluska first opened its doors at Stuart Auditorium in 1913.

By the end of 1913, thirteen private homes had been built, the large auditorium finished and the dam completed.

1917

A larger hotel, the Junaluska Inn, was built in 1917 but burned the following year.

1923

In 1923, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, built a large classroom building, Shackford Hall, at the opposite end of the lake.

1936

The assembly went into bankruptcy during the Great Depression, but in 1936 the bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, organized a "Save Junaluska" campaign, which raised $100,000 and brought the organization out of debt.

1955

The World Methodist Council moved its offices from New York to Lake Junaluska in 1955 (see related story).

1992

Bishop Kenneth Carder was elected to the episcopacy in 1992 by the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference of the U.M. Church.

1997

Coming to the US in 1997, he earned a Master of Divinity and a Master of Theology from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University and a Doctor of Ministry at Duke Divinity School.

2010

Since 2010, he has served as the director of Central American Methodist Course of Study, which trains Methodist pastors who have not earned a formal Master of Divinity degree in such places as El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.

2013

Most recently, Jae has served as pastor of Calvary UMC in Charlotte since 2013.

2015

Reverend Warren is the Senior Pastor of First UMC of Miami Florida appointed in July of 2015.

2017

In October 2017, he met with Pope Francis as part of a delegation from the Methodist-Catholic Dialogue and presented the pope with a Spanish translation he created of the dialogue’s bilateral statement.

2018

He became director of the Center for Reconciliation in 2018.

2021

His most recent book, Hope Always: How to be a force for life in a culture of suicide, released in May 2021.
