Lakewood Country Club - Dallas history

In 1913, LCC opened for the social season with a dinner dance at the clubhouse.

In 1916, the course underwent a redesign by world-renowned golf course designer Donald Ross.

Until 1922, that is, by which time the golf course had been completely revamped by Walter Travis.

The Club opened as Lakewood Country Club in 1924, and since that time has been widely recognized for having 18 exceptional holes of golf where golf legends, such as Sam Snead and Ben Hogan, have left their footsteps.

The New Year’s Invitational, a nationally recognized amateur event, has been played at historic St Petersburg Country Club every year since 1927, and is the oldest sustained amateur golf tournament in the Southeast.

In 1948, the clubhouse once again was struck by fire; it burned from 5:15 a.m. on December 23 to 3:00 p.m. the following day, leaving only the exterior walls standing.

A newly constructed $225,000 clubhouse opened in the fall of 1949 with “modernistic” design elements and large windows to take advantage of the grounds.

When the Club opened in 1959, it was a grand celebration.

Lakewood Country Club opened in 1961.

The first New Orleans Open was played at Lakewood in 1963.

In 1986, Buddy won the United States Amateur Championship and was a member of the World Cup Team.

The Alexander family tradition continues through Skip’s son, “Buddy,” born in St Petersburg, who took his success on the golf course and transplanted it to his coaching career as the head golf coach at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, since 1988.

The golf industry and The Club lost a true golf champion and friend when Skip passed away in 1997.

Lakewood Country Club was on the verge of bankruptcy when the Firemen's Pension Fund purchased the property in May, 2003 for $6 million.

Past champions include one of the top PGA Tour players, Brandt Snedeker, who played and won in 2004.

When the new course re-opened in 2005, it was clear that Lakewood now had one of the top five courses in the metropolitan area.

Founded in 2007, the Foundation’s goals are to educate and inspire action today to ensure that future generations have sustainable, clean groundwater.

A new pool, poolhouse, and large fitness center followed and opened in 2008.

Following in the family footsteps, Tyson qualified for the United States Open in 2009, like his father and grandfather before him.
