Opened in the fall of 1969 as an extension center of Lamar University, LSC-O first held classes in a vacant elementary school, which had been closed after many students went to private schools.
In 1971 the building was destroyed by fire, and a spirited community-wide fundraising effort netted more than $250,000 for the purchase of the former Sabine Supply Company building, located at 410 Front Street in Orange.
In 1971 the Texas Legislature passed legislation enabling Lamar University to operate a two-year educational center, thus removing the extension status and allowing students to take two full years of coursework on the Orange campus.
Classes began at the new location in the fall of 1971.
Since the merger in 1975, enrollment increased from 151 students to a peak of more than 3,000 and the curriculum has been expanded to more than 50 areas of study.
21, 1975, the trustees presented the deed for Port Arthur College to the Lamar University Board of Regents.
In 1977, the 65th Legislature approved House Bill 1134 renaming the campus as Lamar University-Port Arthur; the "Extension Center" designation was dropped.
The campus attracted more students and enrollment grew to over 800 students by 1979.
The Texas legislature created the Lamar University System in 1983 and named Lamar University at Orange as a component of that system.
Senate Bill 78 in 1989 removed restrictions imposed by earlier legislation on the acquisition of real estate and the construction of facilities on campus.
He served until 1994 and was successful in bringing external grant funding to the campus.
After leaving clinical practice in 1996, Ronning was a co-founder and eventual CEO of Psychometrics of North America.
In 1999, the legislature renamed the institution as Lamar State College—Orange.
The Ron E. Lewis Library was completed in 2001, the first new construction in the college's history.
The campus suffered $10 million in damages due to Hurricane Ike in 2008, but was able to resume classes in three weeks.
