The main function of the Groundsworker position is to maintain the campus grounds in a way that provides a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment for the staff, faculty, students and the community. Under general supervision, this position performs work involving some or all of the following: planting, cultivating, fertilizing, spraying and watering ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns and flowers. The Groundsworker is also responsible for raking, removing weeds, cleaning trash from assigned areas including parking lots; preparing and treating soils for planting, maintaining hoses, sprinklers, tools, supplies and equipment in proper condition and repair. Additionally, trimming of trees, hedges, shrubs, and installing tree supports. This position may operate and perform minor repairs and maintenance on power equipment such as lawn mowers, edger's, and weed eaters and assist in preparing athletic fields for events. The Groundsworker may occasionally assist in sprinkler repair, spraying, tree trimming, or nursery functions, operate trucks and other equipment in performance of assigned duties. In addition, this position may construct flower beds, maintain drainage systems, remove brush and trees, collect trash, and help to install concrete and asphalt. Abilities: * Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California. * Perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification. * Utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination. * Learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment. * Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. * Follow simple oral and written instructions. Knowledge: * Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods. * General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment. [CD1] This internship will build on the school[CD2] district level analysis already completed and expand to focus on statewide, regional or local organizations and programs that operate outside of schools. The intern will substantially advance the creation of a comprehensive inventory of civic education and engagement initiatives across California, helping CalCivics better understand patterns, opportunities, and gaps in the state's civics ecosystem. The Groundsworker performs a variety of tasks related to the care, maintenance, and beautification of campus grounds and landscaped areas. Typical duties include planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and spraying ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns, and flowers. Rake leaves, remove weeds, clean trash from assigned areas including parking lots, and prepare and treat soils for planting. Maintain hoses, sprinklers, tools, and equipment in proper condition and repair; trim trees, hedges, and shrubs; and erect tree supports. The Groundsworker operates and performs minor maintenance on small and medium-size power mowers, riding mowers, and other gardening power equipment. May occasionally assist qualified specialists in sprinkler repair, spraying, or tree trimming, and may provide lead work direction to students or unskilled assistants. May perform minor repairs; sweeping or power blowing grounds, including exterior walkways, seating areas, bike and trash enclosures, and recreational areas; maintaining irrigation systems, performing minor sprinkler head repairs, and setting automatic control devices as needed; fertilizing and applying chemicals in assigned areas on an occasional basis; and performing incidental tree trimming and maintenance work. Other duties as assigned. Essential Qualifications Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods. General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment. Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and follow simple oral and written instructions. One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. The Grounds Laborer will perform work in accordance with the PWS requirements of the Branch, i.e., mowing, raking, weed abatement, tree trimming, weed eating, planting of shrubs, trees (up to 6 feet), grass, fertilizing, street maintenance and policing of areas listed in the PWS. Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities: * Perform a wide variety of labor tasks involved in the maintenance of facilities, street maintenance equipment and grounds at the Fort Irwin National Training Center. * Labor tasks provided to assist trades people in the repair and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and grounds at the Fort Irwin National Training Center and occasionally the Barstow Dagget Airfield. * Participation in all APTIM/HDSS EHS and Quality procedures. * Must be able to act professionally in the presence of the public and co-workers. * Must be able to accurately track time, work orders, and parts using electronic devices.
