Portland Japanese Garden - a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Portland, Oregon - is hiring for a full-time Senior Gardener. The Senior Gardener works in concert with the other Gardeners, Lead Gardener, Garden Curator, and Garden Department Administrative Manager. They are responsible for all phases of grounds maintenance and participate in workshops and any professional training provided. They must be willing to be on call, work weekends and garden events, and travel when needed. The Senior Gardener reports to the Garden Curator. Bus Passes: For staff who take public transit as their primary means of commuting to the Garden, we provide paid bus passes. Full-time staff receive a monthly TriMet pass, and part-time staff receive daily passes, based on their work schedule. Transportation Stipend: Staff who take any form of alternative transit to get to work qualify for a $5 daily stipend. This includes taking public transit, walking, biking, carpooling, or getting dropped off. The only staff who do not qualify for the stipend are those who are receiving a bus pass through the Garden. Special projects as assigned. Job Skills/Requirements/Qualifications One (1) year gardener / farm experience. Beekeeping experience preferred. Experience with power tools and equipment such as lawn mower, edger, rototiller and string trimmer preferable but not required. Good understanding of the rhythm of farm work. This includes knowing the appropriate time to do certain tasks, both on a daily and weekly schedule, and also how long to allow for task completion and maintaining a schedule. Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, evenings and holidays. Ability to effectively communicate with all team members. A typical day may include: • Climbing and pruning large shade trees and ornamentals using proper practices • Performing removals, cable bracing, and other tree care techniques • Safely operating chainsaws, equipment, and aerial lifts (bucket trucks) • Working as part of a team to deliver high-quality service to clients • Applying industry safety standards in all aspects of tree care This role offers the opportunity to work outdoors, visit beautiful properties in your community, and apply your climbing expertise to protect and enhance landscapes. About You You are safety-focused, skilled in climbing, and eager to build your career in tree care.
