Position Overview and Responsibilities
St. John's Prep is looking for an experienced facilities groundskeeper. Reporting to the Managing Director of Facilities, the facilities groundskeeper ensures the upkeep, cleanliness, and improvement of all grounds, athletic fields, grounds equipment, and buildings assigned.

Set up for athletic events including preparing fields, opening facilities (gates, grandstands, restrooms.)
Maintain the appearance and functionality of all types of athletic and campus fields.
Inventory grounds equipment and supplies.

Maintain the building assigned for keeping storage supplies and equipment.

With a striking variety of garden rooms, every day working at Stevens-Coolidge brings something exciting and different. Your responsibilities as a fine gardener will range from harvesting heirloom vegetables from the potager garden for our local food bank to helping lead our robust volunteer corps through deadheading in the sunken rose garden. You will contribute to the Trustees' mission by painstakingly caring for this historic, community cornerstone and inspiring its next generation of admirers.
Stevens-Coolidge House and Gardens is a historic 91-acre property with gardens including a potager garden, formal cutting garden, Italianate rose garden, perennial garden, orchard, meadows and the newly created Entry Garden composed of a mix of introduced and native pollinator friendly plantings, greenhouse complex, and nursery. The Trustees are currently focused on sustainability and improving and elevating our public gardens.
The Role:
This position is a limited term, 35 hour per week, non-exempt opportunity suited to a skilled gardener with an energetic, positive personality and strong work ethic. The position is expected to begin in March and end in late October. The Fine Gardener will be based at Stevens-Coolidge House and Gardens in North Andover and reports to the Horticulturist. The successful candidate will have a high level of horticultural skill, a passion for plants, attention to detail, and a positive, collaborative nature. They will be able to work independently and as part of a team, will work outdoors in all kinds of weather, and will support all aspects of horticulture at Stevens-Coolidge House and Gardens. The Fine Gardener will interact with staff, visitors, volunteers, members and donors in an open and engaging manner.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Works both individually and as part of a crew to maintain the shrubs and perennials across the grounds at Mount Auburn Cemetery as assigned by the Director of Gardens & Landscapes including but not limited to weeding, mulching, watering, pruning, bed preparation, planting, edging, fertilizing, picking up branches, and removing snow.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in general landscape gardening work, as described above, under the direction of a Horticulturist or Director of Gardens and Landscapes.
Perform daily grounds sweeps as assigned to address any horticulture issues that arise and that impact the overall guest safety and experience.
Perform other general grounds maintenance tasks which may include, but are not limited to, grass trimming, leaf mulching/pick up, removal of floral tributes, and picking up litter.
Maintain attention to punctuality, accountability and efficiency.
Manage time and attendance with mobile time clock system.
Operate all vehicles and equipment safely, responsibly, and properly.
Follow all Cemetery safety policies and procedures related to assigned tasks, including wearing personal protective equipment (eye and hearing protecting, gloves, etc.), proper handling of chemicals, ladder safety, and lifting and moving heavy objects. Bring unsafe conditions to the attention of the Director of Gardens & Landscapes.
Represent Mount Auburn appropriately at all times when at work; in demeanor, attitude, uniform, and written & verbal communication.
Perform other duties as requested by the Director of Gardens & Landscapes to assist other Departments or to improve the Mount Auburn landscape.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid driver's license required
At least one year experience with maintenance of annuals, perennials, shrubs and/or groundcovers required
Ability to work alone or as part of a team
Ability to read a map of Cemetery grounds
Ability to communicate successfully with staff, and visitors
Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
REQUIRED PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Frequently shovels soil and mulch, and to lifts up to 50 pounds without assistance.
Frequently operates a variety of hand tools and power equipment such as hand pruners, handsaws, pole saw, pole pruners, power pruners, string trimmers, leaf blowers, etc.
Works outdoors in all weather.
Salary range: $23-$25.00/hr.
