The incumbent's primary responsibility is for the aesthetics of the facility grounds in coordination with the lead gardener's guidance. Landscaping The gardener has primary responsibility for landscaping and horticultural activities for the medical center to include seasonal gardening, fertilizing, seeding, watering, transplanting, aerating, pruning, snow removal, applying chemicals to plants in accordance with manufacturers guidance, mowing, weeding and being able to alter the mineral content of soil for individual plants. In completing landscaping activities, the gardener will determine the appropriate time and types of plantings, analyze soil to be able to plant appropriate plants, sloping and planting of terrace areas, transplanting a variety of grasses, flowers, shrubs and trees. As a gardener the incumbent works alongside other employees and sets the pace performing non-supervisory work of the same kind and level as the group and performs other related duties as assigned. The gardener will display skills in the use of hand tools such as a spade shovel, rake, digging bar, axe, seeder and hoe. The incumbent serves as a Gardener (Tractor Operator) at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center within the Facilities Management Service and reports directly to the Supervisor of the Motor Pool and Grounds Department. The gardener will create and work from project plans, aid in preparation of long-range plans and ensure duties are accomplished within the framework of good gardening practices and the master plan for the facility.
