Lansing State Journal company history timeline

1855

The paper was started as the Lansing Republican on April 28, 1855, to advance the causes of the newly founded Republican Party in Michigan.

1857

In 1857 Fitch sold his interests to John A. Kerr, and the firm’s name was changed to Kerr & Hosmer.

1911

Over the next 50 years, the paper saw many name changes and many different owners, finally merging with the rival Lansing Journal forming The State Journal in January 1911.

1936

The first Sunday edition was published on September 27, 1936.

1949

Eyde said he intends on keeping the iconic fixtures of the building, such as the tiled state seal in the main lobby and the 5-foot-wide slice of "The Ancient Tree," a 137-year-old oak tree that was cut down in 1949 to make way for LSJ’s headquarters, according to its commemorative plaque.

1951

The Lansing State Journal has been headquartered on Lenawee Street since 1951.

2016

In January 2016, the LSJ moved from its Lenawee Street headquarters building to the 3rd floor of the Knapp's Centre building.
