The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in the Specialty Pharmacy provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients with complex, chronic, and rare conditions requiring specialty medications. This role ensures safe, effective, and cost-conscious use of specialty therapies through clinical assessment, patient education, monitoring, and collaboration with providers and care teams. The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist serves as a subject matter expert in specialty disease states, supports patient adherence, and contributes to quality improvement initiatives within the pharmacy.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive medication reviews, therapy assessments, and clinical monitoring for specialty patients.
Provide patient education and counseling on specialty medications, including administration, side effects, interactions, and adherence strategies.
Develop individualized care plans in collaboration with prescribers, nurses, case managers, and other members of the healthcare team.
Monitor patient outcomes, laboratory results, and adverse events to optimize therapy.
Support management of prior authorizations, appeals, and insurance requirements for specialty drugs.
Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, accreditation standards (URAC, ACHC, or other relevant), and payer requirements.
Verify specialty prescriptions for accuracy, safety, and appropriateness.
Maintain expertise in handling, storage, distribution, and documentation of specialty medications.
Participate in formulary management and cost-containment strategies.
Adhere to all policies, procedures, and regulatory standards related to specialty pharmacy services.
Participate in clinical quality programs, performance improvement initiatives, and accreditation activities.
Document clinical interventions, outcomes, and patient interactions in electronic systems.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of specialty pharmacy workflows and patient care processes.
Serve as a resource for specialty disease states (e.g., oncology, rheumatology, infectious disease, hepatology, HIV, and endocrinology).
Educate healthcare providers, staff, and patients on new specialty therapies and evidence-based guidelines.
Mentor and precept pharmacy students and staff as appropriate.

Qualifications
Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) degree
Active and unrestricted pharmacist license in Florida
Certification (Preferred): Board Certification (e.g., BCPS, BCACP, CSP, or other specialty certification) or within two years of hiring.

Management of Payor Processes and Relationships
Develops and maintains effective relationships with payors, including contact as required with representatives from payors to ensure accomplishment of utilization management activities
