Miller was born in 1944 and grew up in the Capital Hill area of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Born in 1955, Larry H. Miller grew up in Salt Lake City, the son of an oil refinery worker and a homemaker.
But in November 1963, with the end of the building season, Miller found a job at American Auto Parts as a driver and apprentice counterman.
He married his high school sweetheart, Karen Gail Saxon, on 25 March 1965, and they have five children: Gregory Scott, Roger Lawrence, Stephen Frank, Karen Rebecca, and Bryan Joseph.
Original owner Sam Battistone in 1974 had started the New Orleans Jazz and named the club for the birthplace of jazz music.
They began operations on May 1, 1979.
In 1979 Miller was looking for something new after Gene Osborn left to start a solo dealership.
In 1979, Miller purchased a Toyota dealership in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray, Utah.
With so much evolving, changing and expanding since that first dealership opened its doors in 1979, one thing has remained constant, the continuing mission to exceed the expectations of customers, employees and the community as a whole.
In 1980 he bought an undercapitalized dealership in Phoenix that turned out to be his best-selling operation.
In October 1981 Miller bought out his uncle’s share in the business.
But colorful Frank Lay den, who became head coach in 1981, helped to turn things around eventually.
In 1985, as a successful car dealer, he was asked if he would like to be one of several investors each putting up $200,000 to support the team and become limited partners.
Writer Clay Latimer wrote, “When Karl Malone arrived in Salt Lake City in 1985, he couldn’t make a free throw, hit a jumper, decipher a game plan, and he lacked the emotional resources and ruthlessness to make himself into a first-rank power forward, according to his plentiful critics.
Just over a year later, in order to prevent the sale and subsequent move of the Utah Jazz to Minnesota, on 16 June 1986 he bought the remaining fifty-percent interest from Sam Battistone for $14 million.

According to the Utah Division of Corporations, on December 30, 1986 the new Larry H. Miller Corporation was created as a Utah corporation.
The retail division of the Utah Jazz had started in March 1987 when the Jazz purchased four ProImage shops that sold sports apparel and other gifts and souvenirs.
In 1989 he sold 21,953 cars and recorded gross revenues of $310.77 million.
Under Miller’s leadership and his private financing, ground was broken on 22 May 1990 for a new $66 million arena.
By 1990 Miller owned 16 dealerships in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, and was ranked as Utah’s largest car dealer and the seventeenth largest in the nation.
Named the Delta Center, the state-of-the-art arena was completed on budget and on schedule on 4 October 1991.
Larry Miller’s athletic achievement awards include induction into the International Softball Hall of Fame on 16 August 1992 and installation into the Utah Athletes’ Association Hall of Fame in November 1992.
In 1993 Automotive Age listed him as the fifteenth largest United States car dealer, with nineteen dealerships.
After five years of owning the Golden Eagles, a professional hockey team in Salt Lake City, in 1994 Miller sold the team that had lost about $1 million each year.
To promote his businesses, including the Utah Jazz, his car dealerships, the Delta Center, KJZZ-TV, Pro Image retail stores, and Salt Lake City's Thrifty Car Rental, in 1995 Miller started his own in-house advertising agency called LHM Advertising.
In 1996 the NBA Board of Governors approved the formation of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), and Salt Lake City was chosen as one of the eight cities to sponsor charter teams.
In 1996 the Jazz ended any association with ProImage and changed the name of their stores to Fanzz.
In addition, in 1997 Miller purchased and then demolished the old Jordan High School on 9400 South State Street in Sandy.
Dennis Haslam, who had founded the law firm of Winder and Haslam, had served since 1997 as the president of the Larry H. Miller Group of Sports and Entertainment Companies.
Investors were encouraged by the Jazz's strong fan base, aided by the team's HomeCourt magazine started in 1998 and increased season ticket sales.
In late 1998, also in Sandy, Miller began construction of a two-story Larry H. Miller Entrepreneurship Training Center in partnership with Salt Lake Community College.
In June 1999 the WNBA's 12 teams started the league's third season.
Shauna Smith pointed out in 1999 that, "Few NBA teams have ventured into the retail business.
AHC, founded in Idaho in 2001, specializes in short-term nursing and rehabilitation, home health and hospice services.
Franchise was sold on December 4, 2002.
The arena, commonly known as home to the Utah Jazz, has been the stage for thousands of special events ranging from rock concerts and rodeos to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
The world-class facility sat on 511 acres and included a 4.5-mile road course, off-road and motocross track, and dual karting tracks. (Opening event April 1, 2006.
Renamed Saxton Horne Communications on September 8, 2008 (Saxton is Gail Miller's maiden name; Horne is Larry's middle name).
Million Miles at Miller Charity Ride began at Miller Motorsports Park in 2011 as an opportunity for the cycling community to share in the fundraising efforts of Larry H. Miller Charities.

The first official event in the remodeled Arena was held on September 17, 2017, with a Tim McGraw and Faith Hill concert.
Larry H. Miller Dealerships reached a service milestone when customer Rodrigo Leon of West Jordan, Utah, brought his 2017 Dodge Charger in for an oil and filter change at Larry H. Miller Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Sandy, and became the dealership group’s 20 millionth service customer.
The company reached an agreement to sell Just Sports (and Fanzz) to Fanzz Gear Inc., an affiliate of Ames Watson Capital, LCC, effective February 9, 2018.
The sale was approved by the NBA Board of Governors on December 18, 2020.
The company finalized the sale of LHM Dealerships to Asbury Automotive Group on December 17, 2021.
