Job Description Supervises sport specific student-athletes and assistant coaches (if applicable) in accordance with the Gadsden Independent School District's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include adherence to the Gadsden Independent School District rules, regulations, and Athletic Philosophy; promoting and encouraging students to play sports; and treating student-athletes in a professional manner in conjunction with the athletic coordinator and campus principal. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Other duties may be assigned. Philosophy * If a classroom teacher, gives priority to the professional performance, duties and responsibilities of classroom instruction. * Sets and defines high levels of competitiveness, expectations, and character development. * Encourages students to participate in the athletic program and individualized sport. * Holds pre-season meeting with athletes and their parents to discuss philosophy, guidelines of the program, Code of Ethics, and responsibilities of the student-athlete. Prepares a written document in duplicate form that is to be signed by the parent. NOTE: The school athletic coordinator and athletic director should receive a copy of this document prior to the parent meeting. * Makes athletic participation "fun". * Promotes individual sport and encourages participation and involvement among middle school and elementary school students within the schools attendance zone. Expectations * Develops a competitive program that will excel in athletic performance and competition, classroom achievement, and community expectations. * Creates an environment whereby athletes can achieve academic and athletic success. * Monitors academic performance to ensure the student-athlete is enjoying academic success. * Ensures our athletes that they will be given every opportunity to achieve competitive success. * Enforces the "Code of Ethics" for all athletes. * Teaches sportsmanship and sets an example of good moral and physical behavior. * Assumes responsibility for the conduct and well-being for all players and assistant coaches. * Conduct self in a manner, both on and off the field that will bring credit to yourself, your team, and your school. * Develops an open-line of communication with participants, teachers, administrators, and parents * Is loyal and trustworthy to the student athletes, team, school, and Gadsden Independent School District * Monitors academic performance to ensure the student-athlete is enjoying academic success. * Is responsible to the Athletic Director for the entire program, 9-12. Rules and Guidelines * Is familiar with and follows the policies and guidelines of the Gadsden Independent School District and the New Mexico Activities Association. * Knows district and state eligibility and transfer rules and follows them to the letter. * Ensures that all required Gadsden Independent School District and New Mexico Activities Association paperwork is completed and signed on RANK ONE" before student-athlete is allowed to practice or play. * Adheres to the "Recruiting Guidelines" as established by the Athletic Department. Professional Responsibilities * Reports inappropriate behavior of any athletic personnel or participant to the Principal and School Athletic Coordinator. * Supervises and evaluates assistant coaches, cooperatively with the School Athletic Coordinator, and assigns their respective duties and responsibilities. * Is responsible to the Principal and Athletic Director for the entire program, grades 9 - 12. * Attends professional meetings and clinics. * Works continually with the Principal, Athletic Director, School Athletic Coordinator, and other coaches to upgrade the total athletic program. * Does not allow a injured participant to play until cleared by the attending physician Team Work * Cooperates with and is responsive to the needs of other coaches and their athletic programs. * Encourages athletes to participate in other sports. * Cooperates with Athletic Coordinator and other coaches in the scheduling and use of facilities. * Cooperates with the Athletic Director in arrangements made for travel Program Development * Organizes and implements an off-season and summer program to give our student-athletes a better opportunity to improve their skills. * Promotes and supports athletic programs that involve middle school and elementary school students. * In Season Responsibilities * Head Coach is not a Teacher at School Site * In Season is considered to be from the first day of practice allowed by the NMAA until two weeks following the last game. * Being present during Athletic Class is considered part of coaching duty. Compensation is via District Athletic Stipend. * Head Coach is a Teacher at School Site * If assigned to an Athletic Period coach is being compensated per his/her teaching salary. * Out of Season Responsibilities * Head Coach is not a Teacher at School Site * After School/Summer "off season" program is expected as allowed by NMAA policy * Head Coach is a Teacher at School Site * If assigned to an Athletic Period coach is being compensated per his/her teaching salary. * All duties of running an Athletic Class are expected. * After School/Summer "off season" program is expected as allowed by NMAA policy. Program Coordination with the Middle School Team * Works directly with and supports the middle school program and head coach. * Encourages the middle school team to incorporate the offensive and defensive strategies and philosophy of the high school team. * Involve middle school coaches in high school pre-season meetings and practices until the start of the Middle School sport specific season. Methods and Strategies * Instructs participants in safety-related issues and the need for reporting injuries to the trainer. * Implements coaching strategies that represent technical knowledge and reflects the ability to create, utilize or react to different game situations. * Uses coaching methods and techniques that represent an up-to-date philosophy, the ability to analyze and correct errors, and the employment of sound teaching skills and techniques. * Is innovative in using new coaching techniques and ideas. Management Functions * Complies with local, state and federal rules and regulations. * Agrees to fulfill performance responsibilities in location(s) assigned. * Secures facilities after use; i.e. locker room, equipment room, showers, lights, building, etc. * Supervises the locker room before and after each practice until all players have left. * Assures that school purchased uniforms and equipment are used only for athletic contests. Uniforms and equipment are to be worn and used only for school practices and games. * Develops criteria for earning a letter. * Cooperates with the decision of the head trainer on injury situations. * Follows the Gadsden Independent School District guidelines for fundraising. * Monitors Booster Club (parent organization) activities and fundraising events and assures that the procedures and guidelines of the Gadsden Independent School District and New Mexico Activities Association are followed. Performs such other tasks as may be assigned within the parameters of the job analysis. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Student-athletes, assistant coaches and volunteers (If applicable).
