  • Tax Law Clerk

    Agile Consulting Group

Law clerk job in Atlanta, GA

Agile Consulting Group is a sales and use tax consulting firm looking for part-time help. In the wake of the South Dakota v. Wayfair Supreme Court ruling in June 2018, many companies are finding they have sales tax collection and reporting obligations in new states. As each state's laws are different from one another, we've found a need to help our clients make accurate taxing decisions for their product and/or service offerings. The ideal candidate is a law school student, recent graduate, or someone experienced in reading laws, statutes, rules and regulations, rulings, court cases, and other existing case law and synthesizing that information to arrive at a clear understanding of whether a state has determined if a specific product or service is subject to tax. This position is an opportunity to gain real-world experience in reading tax law, applying it to specific situations in sales and use tax, and then preparing communications to share internally with our team or externally with our clients to convey the technical tax-speak in a manner that it can be understood by “layman” or non-tax/legal minds. We expect this position to require 15-20 hours per week, initially beginning in our Norcross, GA office, but will allow for schedule flexibility and future potential work-from-home possibilities. Create taxability studies classifying clients' product and service offerings as “taxable” or “non-taxable” Write explanations of any caveats to the taxability described above in clear, easy-to-understand, non-legal jargon Provide citations from existing tax code or other relevant case law to support your classifications as described above Prepare requests, letters, etc. to state taxing authorities to clarify tax status of products and services not clearly defined within existing tax law Attention-to-detail Reading comprehension, particularly as it applies to tax law Critical, higher-order thinking Written communication skills Verbal communication skills Current law school student, recent graduate, or prior experience reading law required Familiarity with Microsoft Excel a plus Prior experience with tax research software such as Thomson Reuters RIA Checkpoint, is helpful, but not required
