Job Overview:
Lawclerks serving more than two years may be moved to senior lawclerk status. This is professional legal work performed for the Honorable Rienne H. McElyea of the 18th Judicial District in Bozeman, Montana.
Work involves the performance of professional legal research and other related clerical/administrative work in the preparation of memoranda, opinions, or orders for a judge concerning the cases before him/her. Work is performed under general supervision of a judge and is reviewed through conferences and written reports.
Reviews, studies, research, and annotates laws, court decisions, documents, opinions, briefs, and related legal authorities.
Prepares briefs, legal memoranda, statement of issues involved, draft opinions and orders including appropriate suggestions or recommendations to the judge.
Compiles references on laws and decisions necessary for legal determinations.
Confers with judge concerning legal questions, legal theories, construction of documents, and preparation of orders.
Attends court sessions to hear testimony and record necessary case information; maintains records attendant to court proceedings; assists judge in the selection and preparation of jury instructions.
May perform courtroom duties including recording court testimony or arguments and providing bailiff services.
May transcribe the record of court proceedings if required by the position.
May maintain a law library collection.

The Position
The Litigation Summer LawClerk position is an excellent opportunity for someone who is ambitious, focused and organized to gain experience supporting a fast-paced team in a national law firm. The LawClerk will assist our lawyers in all facets of state and federal civil litigation, including legal research, preparation of first drafts of pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, and reports, and involvement in strategy sessions.

Responsibilities
Conduct in-depth legal and factual research to support active cases.
Analyze legal and factual issues to provide critical insights for case strategies.

Assist attorneys with discovery processes, trial preparation, and trial-related tasks, gaining hands-on experience in litigation.
Collaborate with attorneys on drafting pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, and case strategy discussions.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required. Currently enrolled as a law student for the 2025-2026 academic year at an accredited law school.
Demonstrated experience or a strong interest in litigation and trial practice. Familiarity with litigation processes is a plus.
Highly organized, goal-oriented, and efficient, with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Strong legal research, writing, and oral communication skills with meticulous attention to detail.
Previous work in a professional, fast-paced environment is preferred.
A variety of factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, education, licensure and/or certifications, geographic location, market demands, other business and organizational needs, and other factors permitted by law. Final salary wages offered may be outside of this range based on other reasons and individual circumstances.
