Lawrence General Hospital company history timeline

1875

In 1875, a group of concerned women who were active in Lawrence's churches and who were the wives of the city's prominent businessmen established a "day nursery" to care for sick children whose working mothers could not take care of them during the day.

1886

Popular medical service offerings continued to grow, and in 1886, Lawrence General Hospital was officially born.

1899

In 1899, industrialist William A. Russell, founder of the International Paper Company, made a bequest to the society to renovate his Prospect Hill home for a new hospital.

1902

Lawrence General opened its modern facility in 1902, cementing its position as an anchor health care provider in the community to this day.

1921

The first Lawrence Memorial Hospital was opened in the 300 block of Maine in a converted frame residence on January 17, 1921.

1956

In the spring of 1956, a south addition was completed with funds from the federal government through the Hill-Burton program.

1969

In December 1969, another addition opened to provide expanded service facilities and to increase the total number of beds to 165.

1979

In 1979, the governing board was expanded to include seven members who served on a voluntary basis without a pay.

1994

A three-story Medical Office Building, which was built adjacent to the hospital, opened in December 1994.

1996

A $14.5 million addition to accommodate expansion of outpatient services opened in April 1996.

1998

The Radiology Department was expanded in 1998, including the addition of a permanent Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) facility.

2002

A Treatment and Procedure Center opened on the second floor in 2002.

2003

An expanded Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation program began in 2003 with funding received from a grant from the William T. Kemper Foundation, Commerce Bank Trustee.

2005

LMH launched the LMH Heart Center with the introduction of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention services in 2005.

2010

A 49,000-square-foot medical office building, located on the south side of the hospital campus at 1130 W. 4th Street, opened in 2010.
