Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory seeks an outstanding scientific leader and researcher to serve as the Berkeley Lab is a U.S. DOE national laboratory managed by the University of California and designated a Federally Funded Research and Development Center. Reporting to the Associate Laboratory Director for Earth & Environmental Sciences, the Climate & Ecosystem Sciences Division Director is responsible for providing vision and leadership for the research and operations activities of the Division, overseeing an annual budget of approximately $44 million and a staff of 140 employees and 90 affiliates. The Climate & Ecosystem Sciences Division Director will contribute to the leadership of large-scale Laboratory initiatives and responsible stewardship of the Lab's research, people and assets, including promoting a diverse and welcoming culture at Berkeley Lab. We have several openings for Machinists / Sr. Machinists including Research and Development (R&D) Machinists, Prototype Machinists and Precision Machinists. You will provide journeyman skill level manufacturing support to fabricate parts, components, and assemblies to customer requirements. You will have close technical interactions with engineering support and facility personnel. These positions are in the Manufacturing Engineering Section (MES) of the Materials Engineering Division (MED). In these roles you will get to work with a phenomenally talented team while utilizing cutting edge technology. Our projects at the laboratory help ensure and enhance security of the United States. These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. You will Set up and operate all conventional and most precision and CNC machine tools to manufacture parts and assemblies. Perform shop calculations utilizing intermediate knowledge of material characteristics to determine optimum feeds, speeds, and dimensions. Operate related shop equipment, hand tools, and measuring instruments. Perform shop math calculations utilizing intermediate knowledge of material characteristics to achieve required finishes, dimensions, and overall design intent. Design and fabricate fixtures and jigs to be used during a variety of manufacturing processes. Establish and plan techniques and procedures to carry out technical assignments and set task priorities. Intermediate knowledge of ASME Y14.5M drafting standards (read and interpret blueprints) to produce parts and assemblies. Intermediate knowledge of a wide variety of materials and manufacturing processes including some difficult to machine and exotic materials. Ability to identify, analyze, and provide solutions or alternate approaches to manufacturing problems using individual judgment and creativity. Intermediate level knowledge of CNC programming, machining, and planning. Understanding of safety awareness and safe working practices. Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and protection equipment. Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate tactfully and effectively in a technical environment. Ability to work overtime, various shifts and or weekends to accomplish goals. Additional qualifications at the 981.3 level Advanced knowledge of ASME Y14.5M drafting standards (read and interpret blueprints) to produce parts and assemblies. Lead research and development projects on novel RF semiconductor electronic device and component technologies for next-generation commercial and military applications. Conceive, develop, and execute device research programs. Work with circuit and system designers to extract device requirements from next-generation electronic system and subsystem designs. The RF Device Tecnologies group is focused on new material systems such as N-polar GaN or ultra wide bandgap materials as well as improving the performance and manufacturability of existing GaN processes. Supervise engineering staff to develop novel device microfabrication processes and techniques. Write proposals and communicate results to internal and external customers. Must be able to work well in a creative team environment and possess excellent analytical and communication skills. EXPERIENCE DESIRED: Semiconductor device design, modeling, processing, and characterization. Practical and theoretical understanding of RF electronic devices and a proven track record of leading experimental electronic device research and development programs required. Hands-on experience with microfabrication and leading engineering staff in developing semiconductor processes. Must have authored scientific publications and given technical presentations. Proposal writing and program management experience is a plus. Experience with GaN HEMTs and related materials is also a plus.
