Job Description
The Center for Global Security Research (CGSR) was established at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in 1996 to bring together experts from the science, technology, and policy communities to address pressing national security challenges. For over 20 years, CGSR has engaged diverse perspectives on topics important to national security, deterrence, diplomacy, dual-use technology, arms control, nonproliferation, space, cyber, biosecurity, and energy security.
We have openings in Summer 2026 for graduate level students or students who have received their bachelors, master's, or are working on their PhD to engage in practical research on global security topics. Students will work with CGSR over the duration of three to four months as a research associate (RA). RAs will engage in practical research to further their educational and career goals, while also supporting the development of strategies for national security and LLNL's mission focus areas. Examples of relevant fields of research include nuclear deterrence, arms control, nonproliferation, emerging technologies, cybersecurity, space, biological & chemical security, and energy security.
CGSR's objectives are as follows:
To explore the dynamics of potential 21st century strategic conflicts (i.e., those with a potential nuclear aspect) and to formulate ideas about how to achieve U.S. deterrence and other objectives in such conflicts.
To explore the sources and characteristics of strategic competition in the emerging security environment and to formulate organizing concepts to enhance the competitive position of the United States and its allies and partners over the long term.
To identify whether and how technically based approaches can address new challenges to national and international security.
To catalyze broader national and international thinking about the requirements of effective deterrence, assurance, and strategic stability in a changed and changing security environment.
To assist in the development of new generations of experts motivated by a clear view of the changed and changing security environment.

You will
Conduct an independent research project on an agreed upon topic aligned with CGSR/LLNL research priorities.
Support CGSR/LLNL through contributions to ongoing research activities. Tasks may include contributing to literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, and workshop summary reports.
Provide analysis to ongoing work, involving a moderate to high degree of technical and analytic complexity.
Assist in the planning and execution of workshops to support CGSR research efforts.
Gather and analyze data and information in support of broader CGSR research efforts.
Participate in research planning and evaluation discussions with other members of the CGSR staff.
Attend relevant research seminars, speakers' series, and workshops.
Present research to LLNL staff at end of the assignment.
Prepare end-of-assignment technical report or publication.
Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Must be currently enrolled in an accredited university and actively pursuing a graduate degree, or have recently completed a bachelor's or master's degree in a field of research aligned with CGSR analytic priorities. Areas of study include international relations and/or security, political science, economics, public policy, emerging technologies, nonproliferation, energy, biosecurity, foreign language studies, or related fields.
Demonstrated academic and/or professional achievement in a relevant field of research aligned with CGSR analytic priorities.
Strong record of independent research and publication, or a strong proposal of research to be done while at CGSR and in future academic and professional settings.
Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
Pay Range
$6,752 - $8,201 Monthly

Job Description
We have an opening for a Hoisting and Rigging Engineer to serve as the Subject Matter Expert for all crane, hoist, and rigging safety processes. In this role, you will participate in designing, installing, maintaining, repairing, and decommissioning new and existing systems, structures, and components at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) consistent with Department of Energy (DOE), OSHA, and other regulations. You will contribute to the engineering design and development and redesign of hoisting and rigging systems and equipment upgrades to continually improve performance and reliability while meeting the highest standards of safety and rigor. This position will be in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations Division (LSEO) within the Engineering Directorate (ENG) and will report both to the LSEO Associate Division Leader and the ENG Chief Mechanical Engineer. In this role which requires being licensed Professional Engineer, you will provide civil and mechanical engineering expertise and support with focus on hoisting, rigging, and material handling to multiple teams within ENG in support of LLNL programs/projects or Institutional activities.
This position will be filled at the level based on knowledge and related experience.
You will
Provide civil, structural, and mechanical engineering solutions to complex issues and problems that require in-depth analysis and frequent use of ingenuity and creativity.
Conduct technical tasks and support the design and redesign of both large and small projects to include siting, integrity, suitability, and compatibility.
Participate as a member of multidisciplinary teams which utilizes experience in hoisting and rigging safety applications to design unique solutions for systems following established codes and standards.
Conduct technical or operational projects and/or support research efforts by adhering to the highest standards of personnel and facility safety while guiding the execution of high-energy, multi-hazard system demonstrations and experiments.
Collaborate in the development of innovative methods and technology and incremental advancement of knowledge.
Participate in formal and informal design reviews by presenting design materials to inter-organization and external audiences and managing the requirements and specifications used for engineered safety systems.
Prepare safety and engineering support documentation and reports needed for successful execution of experiments.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
Bachelor's degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Professional Engineer license in Civil, Civil/Structural, or Mechanical Engineering.
Demonstrated experience in hoisting and rigging systems and related civil and/or mechanical engineering, including advanced knowledge of and aptitude toward design, structural, validation, testing, suitability, and evaluation of conformity with applicable codes and standards.
Advanced application and development of technical, business, or operational principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to independently contribute to technical projects or support of programs using creativity and innovation.
Advanced experience with ANSI, ASME, and OSHA lifting equipment requirements, which includes performing or validating calculations and crane/ hoisting & rigging system designs.
Applied experience with DOE or equivalent US government requirements for hoisting, rigging, and material handling.
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including the ability to direct and mentor other team members.
Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical or operational information and provide advice to management, regulators, reviewers, and stakeholders.

$175,530 - $222,564 Annually for the SES.3 level
$210,630 - $267,060 Annually for the SES.4 level

This HR leadership role oversees the Laboratory's Employee & Labor Relations (ELR) function, including related employee programs such as Conflict and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Serving as the Laboratory's subject matter expert in employee and labor relations, the position advises the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) and senior management on strategic direction, policies, programs, and services.
The incumbent is responsible for preparing and responding to labor relations matters and is recognized as an expert in all aspects of Employee and Labor Relations, UC and DOE policies and procedures, and applicable state and federal labor and employment laws. The role serves as the Laboratory's chief spokesperson on labor relations issues, including contract negotiations and arbitration.
Additionally, this position selects and manages a professional staff and builds and maintains effective partnerships with the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) and the Department of Energy (DOE) on employee and labor relations and related policies and procedures.
You will:
Act as a collaborative partner with the CHRO to advise on strategy. May provide advice and counsel to senior Laboratory management in the development and presentation of the Laboratory's positions and proposals in contract negotiations.
Serve as the primary liaison with the UC Office of the President's Labor team and as chief spokesperson in local collective bargaining with all unions and in labor and employment arbitration proceedings.
Provide expert guidance and oversight on policies, programs, strategies, and organizational changes that have implications for employee relations, ensuring proactive involvement to maintain company trust and culture.
Oversee and define the Laboratory's approach to managing and addressing Employee Relations escalations and concerns.
Ensures that all collective bargaining agreements and Laboratory policy (Regulations and Procedures Manual - RPM) are administered effectively, emphasizing the protection of management prerogatives while fostering collaborative labor-management relationships.
Represent the Laboratory in external proceedings involving agencies such as PERB, EEOC/DFEH, and EDD, providing research and analysis regarding issues under HEERA, ADA, FMLA, NLRB, FEHA, and CFRA.
Leads and manages the ELR professional staff, focusing on developing advanced skills in conflict resolution, mediation, facilitation and crisis support.
Lead HR investigations, disciplinary reviews, and the Crisis Action Team (CAT) to ensure due process and rapid resolution of workplace threats or misconduct.
Ensure the ELR team provides effective advice and counsel to Laboratory management and HR field teams regarding management decisions encompassing employee job performance, development, and misconduct.

We are looking for:
A Bachelor's Degree in business, human resources, industrial relations, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
A minimum of 10 years of Employee and Labor Relations experience, with 3 or more years in a management role leading professional employees.
Extensive and demonstrated experience in all facets of labor and employee relations, including:

Security Clearance:

Embark on a mission vital to both national and global security as the Deputy Classification Officer and Classification Advisor within the Office of Classification and Export Control (OCEC) at LLNL. In this role you will

Develop and communicate information on highly complex classification issues and policies by means of briefings, correspondence, and bulletins given to the Laboratory Program Management.

Qualifications
This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top-Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
Must be able to maintain security access to sigmas, SAP, and SCI compartments.
Master's degree in technical fields such as physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, or related fields or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Broad expertise and knowledge of classified matter protection and control (CMPC) laws, regulations, executive orders and DOE Orders.

We have an opening for a Boiler & Pressure Systems Mechanic II. You will install, operate, maintain, and repair a combination of packaged boilers and pressure systems associated with building heating HVAC (heating hot water and low-pressure steam), process steam, related operating systems, and utilities of LLNL plant and research facilities. You will
Perform journey-level boiler technician work including troubleshooting, installation, operations/operator, and maintenance and repair of hot water boilers, low-pressure steam boilers, thermal fluid systems, medium pressure steam generating equipment (including ASME Section l steam boilers), Low NOx burners, and related systems and components; to include combustion tuning, Burner Management System programming, and steam boiler water treatment testing.
Install, operate, maintain, and repair a wide variety of mechanical and electrical equipment using materials, power tools, hand tools, and specialty tools applicable to the trade.

Qualifications
Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
Completion of an apprenticeship training program and/or significant equivalent journey- to advanced- level experience working with a combination of commercial packaged hot water and steam boilers as well as low and high-pressure steam systems.
Intermediate to advanced skills, knowledge, and experience related to troubleshooting, operating and maintaining steam boilers, hot water boilers, thermal fluid heaters, and related systems, (e.g. expansion tanks, pumps, valves, water treatment, PLC based burner management systems, and electrical components) including basic electrical knowledge for AC circuits and DC circuits.

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Job Description
We have an opening for a Hazardous Material Packaging and Transportation Technologist/Senior Hazardous Material Packaging and Transportation Technologist at Site 300 to provide general technical support of transportation, shipping/receiving, processing, packaging, storage and accounting of explosive/radioactive/hazardous/classified materials to programs at LLNL. You will perform tasks related to the control and accountability of controlled materials, maintain records, and keep portable measurement equipment and instruments in good operating condition. This position is in the Controlled Materials Group (CMG) within the Packaging and Transportation Safety Functional Area (PTSFA)/Packaging and Transportation Safety (PATS) Program within the Environment Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate.
This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
Transport/transfer, receive, process, package, and ship explosive/radioactive/ hazardous/classified materials on and off-site according to applicable Federal/State regulations and DOE/LLNL procedures.
Maintain the storage, inventory, and accurate records of explosive, radioactive, and accountable material.
Perform a variety of Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) and nuclear material measurements, including the operation of measurement equipment, analysis of general data, results, and certifications of materials.
Perform duties as an Explosives Handler, Radiation Worker, and HAZMAT employee such as packaging and transporting controlled materials, taking dose measurements, and maintaining proper contamination control while working with radioactive materials, and packaging, preparing, and making shipments of regulated hazardous materials (explosives, radioactive, etc) as well as following all DOE requirements associated with the packaging and transportation of classified materials/parts.

Operate commercial vehicles requiring a Class C Commercial Driver's License with Hazardous Materials Endorsement.
Participate in the On Call program as required by Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations for emergency response activities and off-site operations.

We have multiple openings for Mechatronics Engineers for the W87-1 Modernization Program Joint Test Assembly (JTA) team. The JTA Nuclear Explosive Package (NEP) Electronics Product Realization Team (PRT) is looking for mechanical and electrical engineers with a background in both disciplines to mature and optimize instrumentation design architecture. This includes ensuring unique sensors measure data per requirements, interface with the on-board data acquisition module and firmware, and are mechanically survivable. You will work with a team of mechanical and electrical engineers to realize the instrumentation package for use in JTA flight assets. These positions will be in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate. DTED supports the Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program within Strategic Deterrence (SD).
Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

The Special Programs group is looking for talented managers (Manager, R&D Science and Engineering) experienced with Information Technology (IT) systems, communication systems, situational awareness systems, project management, and real-world operations. Special Programs provides a range of communications and cross-domain situational awareness services in support of various National security missions. The work portfolio includes development activities as well as 24x7x365 operations. The group is primarily funded through proposals to external agencies and supports multiple US government agencies in meeting critical national security needs.
Managers in Special Programs will manage teams that:

We are seeking an early to mid-career
Electronics Technician
to build, integrate, test, and sustain diagnostic hardware used to capture data during experiments at the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate. You will support the Material and Radiation Effects (MRE) Electrical Engineering team within NIF Target Diagnostics Engineering and Science (TDES) in a multidisciplinary, highly collaborative environment with a strong emphasis on fiber optic handling and precision assembly. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the 531.2 or 531.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
In this role, you will
Provide general technical support to scientists, engineers, and senior technical personnel performing activities related to NIF diagnostic builds, including precision assembly, data capture, analysis, and characterization.
Fabricate and verify electrical cables and harnesses used for precision timing and data transport, applying IPC workmanship practices, electrostatic discharge controls, and configuration control.
Assemble, route, label, terminate, inspect, clean, and test single-mode fiber optic links supporting diagnostic systems.
Identify and acquire diagnostic data, perform analysis and evaluation, document results, and communicate with diagnostic Subject Matter Experts to ensure compliance with project goals.
Ensure compliance with Environmental, Health and Safety (ES&H) policies and procedures while working with radiological, laser, and electrical hazards.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional responsibilities at the 531.3 level
Lead diagnostic system builds and fiber runs, including developing fiber and coaxial loss budgets, test plans, and acceptance criteria.
Interpret complex Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) and Optical Backscatter Reflectometer (OBR) traces to isolate faults, verify fiber routing, and recommend effective corrective actions.
Author, review, and modify electrical documentation, propose improvements to assembly methods, and mentor junior personnel in industry best practices.
Perform advanced verification using Vector Network Analyzers (VNA), Spectrum Analyzers, and Time Domain Reflectometers (TDR) to ensure precision timing and impedance control.
Qualifications
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
Associate degree in electronics, electro-optics, photonics, or related technical field, or equivalent military or industry training and experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Intermediate experience fabricating and verifying cables and harnesses, including coax assemblies for 50 ohm systems; ability to perform continuity, polarity, and basic hi-pot tests as directed.
Intermediate technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to solve problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
Intermediate experience assembling, operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting scientific and laboratory equipment for diagnostic, fiber optic, optical, data acquisition, or experimental systems.
Effective written and verbal communication, and presentation skills sufficient to develop and report data, and to work successfully with multidisciplinary teams in a highly collaborative environment.
Ability to qualify as a NIF Radiological Worker, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and work safely around lasers, high voltage, and interlock-controlled equipment in accordance with following established controls and procedures.
Ability to work in confined or restricted spaces, climb stairs, and stand or walk for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs with assistance, as needed.
In addition, at the 531.3 level
Advanced experience with fiber optic handling and testing, including connector inspection and cleaning, bend-radius and strain relief management, and insertion loss/return loss measurements OR advanced experience fabricating and verifying cables and harnesses, including coax assemblies for 50 ohm systems; ability to perform continuity, polarity, and basic hi-pot tests as directed.
Proficiency using bench instruments, including oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power meters, light sources, and at least one of the following: TDR, OTDR, OBR, spectrum analyzer, or VNA.
Experience reading, interpreting, and creating schematics, wiring diagrams, and other related electronics documentation.
Effective written and verbal communication, feedback and presentation skills sufficient to develop and report data, and to work successfully with multidisciplinary teams in a highly collaborative environment.
Qualifications We Desire
FOA (Fiber Optics Association) or ETA (Electronics Technician Association) fiber certifications, such as CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician), CPCT (Certified Premises Cabling Technician), or FOI (Fiber Optics Installer) with Tier 1 and Tier 2 fiber testing experience.
Workmanship certifications, such as IPC/WHMA-A-620 and J-STD-001.
Experience with single-mode fiber, including polishing, termination, or basic fusion splicing.
Familiarity with vacuum practices, vacuum compatible materials, and electrical or optical feedthroughs.
Basic proficiency with CAD tools or drawing viewers for markups and redlines.
Experience with interferometry-based diagnostics.
