WHAT WILL THIS JOB ENTAIL? • Provide expert immigration legal guidance and mentorship to pro bono attorneys handling a range of immigration matters, including representation of asylum seekers; survivors of trafficking seeking T visas; survivors of crime pursuing U visas; survivors of domestic violence seeking relief under VAWA; minors eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status; individuals navigating family-based immigration; and others pursuing forms of humanitarian or family-based relief. • Attend Ayuda's pro bono immigration clinics to support volunteer attorneys, offer real-time supervision, and ensure high-quality, client-centered services. • Serve as a primary mentor for pro bono attorneys engaged in long-term case representation through Ayuda's pro bono case pipeline, providing ongoing technical support, review of filings, and strategic case guidance. • Remain current on evolving immigration laws, policies, regulations, and court practices through regular training, professional development, and review of legal updates, and share relevant developments with pro bono partners. • Represent Ayuda in meetings, working groups, and collaborative initiatives with partner law firms, community organizations, and external stakeholders to strengthen program visibility and coordination. • Conduct trainings for pro bono partners, community groups, and other audiences on immigration law topics, trauma-informed representation, and emerging legal trends. • Collaborate closely with Ayuda's social services teams to ensure clients referred to or served by pro bono partners receive holistic, integrated support. • Contribute to Ayuda's development efforts by assisting with program storytelling, sharing client impact narratives (with appropriate consent), and participating in fundraising events that highlight the value of pro bono collaborations. Prepares and prosecutes criminal financial fraud Medicaid cases as well as criminal abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation cases relating to Medicaid beneficiaries. Reviews subpoenas, search warrants, affidavits for arrest warrants and search warrants, ensuring that all work product is well-written, accurate, and grammatically correct before forwarding the written work to supervisors or courts. Conducts preliminary/pre-charging analyses of MFCU cases involving suspected health care fraud by Medicaid-funded medical/health care providers and cases involving abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of District citizens residing in federally-funded facilities or receiving Medicaid services, for possible criminal prosecution by DC USAO; handles intake/papering duties and all post-arrest phases of MFCU matters, including discovery, additional investigation, grand jury presentations, plea negotiations, trial, and sentencing; and compiles data and tracks the progress of all assigned MFCU matters. Is the lead in all oral presentations made in connection with a criminal case, including grand jury proceedings and court appearances; presents to DC USAO and MFCU supervisors, as well as MFCU staff, supervisors, and managers. Makes formal presentations at conferences at the request of MFCU management. Keeps MFCU and OIG management, as well as key stakeholders, apprised on the progress and status of all assigned cases/legal work. Performs other related duties as assigned. Licensure and Trial Experience The incumbent must have a law degree and be a member of the DC Bar or be eligible to be waived into the DC Bar. (If eligible for a waiver, the incumbent must successfully obtain admission to the DC Bar within 360 days of commencing employment at OIG.) The incumbent must have a minimum of three (3) years of legal experience practicing law in an area closely related to the activity of the MFCU as well as three (3) years of litigation experience, either civil or criminal, that includes motion and trial practice. The incumbent must have experience handling multiple investigations/litigations at the same time. The incumbent must be appointed as a SAUSA by the United State Attorney for the District of Columbia, and must successfully complete USAO training which includes a rotation in the Misdemeanor Section of the DC USAO.
