Example Lawyer Essay

My dream job is to be a sexual harassment lawyer.

I always knew I wanted to do something in the law, but recent events in my family's lives steered me towards that specific area of the law. My father is an employment lawyer and deals with a lot of sexual harassment, so he has definitely been a huge influence to me. But, two years ago a family member of mine was sexually assaulted and because of technicalities in the case, they were not able to convict anyone and my family member had to go to school with the person for two years. They really struggled with their mental health and although they now have recovered, it took time. I remember feeling so helpless and lost during this time, I did not know how to help this person, it made me feel sick. That’s when I really decided what I want to do and be. I want to be able to help people, who don’t know how they can help themselves. I want to learn how to defend these victims, and change their lives.

This job is less about money or happiness to me, but purpose. If I have the ability to be able to help people in the future, I will. I want to make people feel comfortable sharing their stories and no longer staying silent, because that’s the worst thing for everyone. No matter your race, gender, religion, ethnicity, you should never feel alone or scared to talk to someone and challenge the norm, and I want to be that person they can talk to and trust.

My plans to reach this goal are simple in theory, but are probably going to be harder in practice. I will be attending Claremont Mckenna College in the Fall, where I plan on majoring in Economics in order to obtain a strong background in finance and logical thinking and decision-making, and I will minor in Legal Studies for obvious reasons. After my four years of undergrad, it is my plan to attend Law School on the East Coast (my dream would be Columbia). After that, I will hopefully get a job at a firm in either New York, San Francisco, or Washington DC, and after a few years of experience I want to open my own firm, like my dad did.
