    General Job Information This position is standardized position description designated for use in any District of Columbia Government department, office, or agency. This position description depicts the generalized duties and responsibilities of an Attorney Advisor responsible for providing proficient legal advice in one practice area within an Office. Legal practice areas include, but are not limited to, affirmative civil litigation, defense civil litigation, criminal prosecution, juvenile prosecution, child protection, child support, domestic violence, consumer and trade protection, personnel and labor relations, real estate, procurement, economic development, tax and bankruptcy, and land use, etc. Duties and Responsibilities Serves as a senior attorney in the Office/Division/Section handling the more complex and difficult matters. Reviews various legal documents and relevant case. laws to determine whether execution or non-execution of proposed actions is in the best interest of the District of Columbia government. Provides statement of reasons and draft language necessary to obviate objections. Examines and analyses proposed orders, legislation and other legal documents from various sources for legal sufficiency, both as to the form and substance of rulemaking decisions. Performs the aforementioned research and provides oral or written opinions resulting from such analysis. Prepares and/or reviews complaints, citations and other documents related to pleadings, as the basis for hearings or other actions. Serves as prosecutor, presenting evidence to support cases and handles administrative appeals. Attends and participates in hearings before committees of the Council of the District of Columbia and the Congress pertaining to proposed laws and/or legislation which may affect existing laws related to the functions of the Office/Division/Section. Performs all functions related to case and calendar management; e.g., preparation of case transfer or close-out reports; case file entry updating; documentation of action taken; timely review of legal proceedings; and any other administrative functions associated with conclusion of assigned matters. Keeps abreast of judicial, agency, and other changes in laws and regulations related to the functions of the Office/Division/Section. Recommends appropriate course of action to supervisor, as deemed necessary. Qualifications and Education Applicants must have a law degree and be a member of the District of Columbia Bar or eligible for waiver into the bar. Must remain a member of the DC Bar in good standing throughout tenure as an Attorney. Must have at least 3 years of legal experience as a licensed attorney. Applicants must possess one (1) year of Specialized Experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, Specialized Experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Licenses and Certifications The incumbent must have a law degree and be a member of the District of Columbia Bar or be eligible for waiver into the bar. Must remain a member of the DC Bar in good standing throughout tenure as an Attorney. Working Conditions/Environment Work Is predominately sedentary; however, some walking. standing, and bending are encountered. The work is performed in an office environment.
