LE SUEUR COUNTY company history timeline

1853

The same year Le Sueur County was established -- 1853 -- the county's first grand jury convened in Peck and Bean's Boarding House in the village of Le Sueur.

1854

Patten and family came in 1854 and eventually built the town's first general store, creamery, elevator and warehouse.

1857

The first three: Le Sueur, Ottawa, and Kasota, along the river, but also Cleveland, a few miles inland, Waterville and Elysian, were established in 1857.

1867

In the late fall of 1867, just two years after the close of the Civil War, the first railroad entered Le Sueur County from the north in the Minnesota Valley and arrived in Le Sueur.

1868

During this time, the boarding house burned and court convened above Myrick's Store and then on the second floor of the Smith Building, which was built in 1868 on the northwest corner of Ferry and Main.

1875

Sessions of court were also held in Cleveland until citizens compromised and made the new settlement of Le Center the county seat in 1875.

1876

The county offices were moved to the new location in 1876 and the county seat has remained there ever since.

A few years later, in 1876, the Minneapolis and St Louis Railroad was built from north to south through the eastern portion of the county passing through New Prague, Montgomery, Kilkenny, and Waterville.

1888

In 1888, Patten built the first Le Sueur Electric Light plant to supply his own need for electric lights.

1895

At a special election in October, 1895, the voters authorized a $20,000 bond issue as a fund for water and light development.

1896

And, after some initial difficulties, a 100 horse-power steam engine was installed in the 38- by 60-feet light plant and finally began furnishing electricity in 1896.

The current courthouse, pictured above, was built on the site in 1896 and the old building, furniture, and fixtures were auctioned off to help pay for building expenses.

1903

In 1903, the Milwaukee Railroad Company built a branch line, which passed through Le Sueur Center.

1920

The tower was originally one story taller but was damaged by lightning and rebuilt in 1920.

1930

The name Le Center was changed from Le Sueur Center to Le Center in 1930.

1960

By the mid-1960's, power demand again began to outpace local production capacity.

1964

So, in 1964, the City, with regional power supplier NSP, installed the first set of transmission lines to enable the City to purchase power from outside our local generation station.

1981

The Le Sueur County Courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

1986

And, in 1986, the City built a second set of line to act as backup and to prepare for eventual phasing out of the local generating engines.

1992

In May of 1992, the City of Le Sueur and 7 other Municipals formed MMPA (MN Municipal Power Agency). MMPA is responsible for all our wholesale power supply for it's members.
