Description: Currently, we're looking for a Senior Technical Artist. This opportunity is for a full-time position in Boston, MA or Chicago, IL. Senior Technical Artists at Disbelief are leaders and key contributors on their project. They act as a bridge between the technical and artistic aspects of game development, empowering programming, art and design to achieve more than either could on their own. Beyond solving tough problems on their own, tech artists act as mentors and teachers. As a Senior Technical Artist, you will be a key in investigating and solving difficult performance problems while maintaining visual quality. You will work in a variety of areas including modeling, materials, texturing, animation, FX, gameplay, UI, as well as building art tools to improve workflows.

Key Responsibilities:
Solve technical problems from an artist's point of view
Diagnose and solve performance problems while championing visual quality standards
Act as a primary bridge between art, engineering and gameplay teams
Teach and mentor other artists
Continue to explore new software and techniques, including novel solutions

Degree in Art, Tech Art, or equivalent experience

Deep understanding of real time rendering
Experience working on at least one AAA or equivalent project

You'll bring advanced skills, both artistic and technical, along with attention to detail and a passion for creating high-quality, accessible visuals that meet our ambitious artistic and technical goals.
Daily Responsibilities
* Collaborate with graphics engineers, designers, artists, and other developers to align rendering approaches with creative and technical targets.
* Conduct look-development and break down high-bar visual goals into actionable, real-time-ready procedures.
* Prototype, test, and extend rendering systems within Unreal Engine 5.
* Research emerging trends and advancements in rendering technology.
* Maintain visual coherence across scalability targets through thoughtful workflows and system integration.
* Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve rendering and performance-related challenges.
* Collaborate on GPU budgets and content memory allocations, offering guidance to content developers.
* Develop test gyms and unit tests to help artists deliver optimized, performant content.

Qualifications
Qualifications
* Typically 7+ years of experience in real-time graphics, rendering, or technical artistry.
* Strong understanding of GPU workflows (lighting, rendering, compute shaders), particularly in Unreal Engine 5.
* Proven experience in developing shaders and materials that balance performance and visual quality.
* Proficiency in HLSL, GSL, or other shader languages.
* Experience developing tools or automation systems using C++ or Python.
* Experience with node-based shading systems.
* Familiarity with DirectX 12 or similar graphics APIs.
* Demonstrated experience building scalable lighting, shading, and material pipelines.
* Experience with profiling tools such as PIX, RenderDoc, Unreal Insights, or similar.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts across disciplines.
* Initiative in driving shared goals, mentoring peers, and contributing independently and collaboratively.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Collaborate with lighting leadership, Art Direction and cross-discipline team members to maintain lighting's aesthetic and technical standards
Work with proprietary toolsets to own the creation of lighting for significant portions of our in-game worlds
Develop dynamic/scripted lighting, character and hard surface object light rigs, and in-game narrative content from start to finish
Work with Design stakeholders to ensure gameplay needs are met
Stay informed on new developments in rendering, particularly about lighting, atmosphere, and surfaces
Provide constructive feedback to production artists who are working on lighting-related
REQUIRED SKILLS
Strong understanding and sense in lighting, shadow, and color to create a visually engaging space
Ability to follow and adapt to a wide range of design references and narrative context to achieve lighting expectations for mood, tone, and fidelity
Experience in lighting characters and environments, interior & exterior, different times of day, etc. With various lighting techniques and tools
Understanding of composition and the ability to enhance mood through lighting
Experience with materials/shaders and an understanding of their relationship with light
