Lead Engineer job 6 miles from Bethesda
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.
You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. We're looking for a passionate Systems Development Engineer to drive the evolution of Route 53 Resolver DNS Firewall and Route 53 Profiles. This is a unique opportunity to own critical infrastructure that protects thousands of organizations worldwide from DNS-based threats while simplifying DNS management at scale. You'll design and build solutions that expand our global footprint, enhance our security capabilities, and create operational excellence for services that handle billions of DNS queries daily. If you're excited about solving complex distributed systems challenges, thrive in customer-obsessed environments, this role is for you.

Collaborate with product management to translate customer feedback into technical solutions
Architect and implement new security features to defend against evolving DNS threats
Create efficient, scalable systems for managing DNS filtering rules, policies, and configurations
Build tools that simplify operational processes and improve service reliability
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering best practices
Partner with other AWS teams to integrate DNS security capabilities across the AWS ecosystem.
A day in the life
On a “typical” day you may -
Attend team reviews of service metrics and operational health or design reviews for a new feature.
Dive deep in code implementing a system to optimize deployment of the service infrastructure in a newly launched AWS region.
Collaborate with product managers to prioritize customer requests, or partner with support teams to investigate and resolve a complex customer issue. Lead a technical discussion with junior team members about optimizing a data pipeline for filtering DNS queries at scale.
Throughout the day, you'll balance immediate operational needs with long-term architectural improvements, all while keeping customer experience at the forefront of your decisions.
About the team
We builders behind Route 53 Resolver DNS Firewall and Route 53 Profiles - services that were born from listening to our customers' needs for better DNS security and management. Our team has a strong builder culture where we value invention, operational excellence, and customer obsession. We celebrate diverse perspectives and encourage open debate to find the best solutions.
