Responsibilities:
Review plans of new construction, renovation, and repairs of commercial, residential, and industrial buildings and other structures at the various design stages beginning no later than the preliminary design phase and provide code analysis of compliance. The review shall include written comments provided to Project Managers and others for resolution or response;
Evaluate alternative designs using accepted engineering practices. The review shall verify compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, Mechanical Code, Plumbing Code, ADA, other referenced standards, the Statewide Fire Prevention Code, and the GMU Design Standards;
Review shop drawings, calculations, and/or submittals for compliance to code;
Perform interdisciplinary inspections of new construction, renovation, and repairs of buildings and other structures to verify materials, footings, foundations, framing, insulation, electrical, mechanical, fuel gas, plumbing, accessibility and final inspections.;
Ensure compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, the Statewide Fire Code, and the GMU Design Standards.;
Ensure construction is in compliance with the approved construction documents and drawings. Inspections include a report to Project Managers and responsible parties for information or action as necessary;
Perform review of special inspection reports and alternative construction product submissions for acceptance and record; and

What You'll Do
Design and Coordinate Protection Schemes• Design hardware and software-based electrical protection schemes for microgrid generation assets including batteries, wind, PV, reciprocating engines, and turbines across grid-connected, islanded, abnormal, and contingency operating modes• Perform or oversee protection coordination studies and develop relay settings that ensure selectivity, reliability, and system safety
Integrate Protection with System Design and Controls• Partner with electrical design, power systems, and controls teams to understand system behavior, communication limitations, and control responses that influence protection design• Ensure protection interactions are well understood, properly coordinated, and integrated with supervisory controls and SCADA systems
Evaluate Equipment and Define Protection Requirements• Review supplier documentation for transformers, switchgear, BESS, wind turbines, PV, reciprocating engines, and turbines to understand damage thresholds, risks, and operating limits•Define appropriate protection functions, logic, and setpoints based on equipment characteristics and system requirements
Support Testing, Commissioning, and Lifecycle Reliability•Develop clear documentation and configuration packages including relay settings, logic diagrams, and interface specifications with version control and traceability•Support site testing and commissioning activities, including end-to-end functional testing and relay verification using test equipment•Assist with post-event root-cause analysis by reviewing relay oscillography and event logs to improve system safety and reliability

FireProtectionEngineer (FPE)
The Position
The FireProtectionEngineer for Above Group shall contribute and support FireProtectionengineering, fire and life safety systems, code compliance, and risk assessment efforts for the firm. The FPE shall be a graduated engineer from an ABET accredited institution who shall directly contribute to the Firm and its success through engineering and design efforts. The ideal candidate will be capable of developing comprehensive fireprotection plans and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. The FPE is also responsible for contributing to the growth of the team by leading and mentoring them in expanding their capabilities and contributions. The FPE shall execute engineering and design duties as required to ensure quality products.
The FPE shall be an Engineer registered as a Professional Engineer (PE) at a minimum (preference given to FPE licensed in Florida). Additional credentials are encouraged and desired.
The FPE is an Engineer by education and experience:
Ability to combine personal judgment with project information and knowledge of codes and standards to implement design criteria.
Has expertise in fireprotection, fire alarm, and life safety systems. Knowledge and experience with HVAC, mechanical, plumbing and utility systems a plus. Priority given to experience with healthcare facilities, and central plant infrastructure (boiler systems, chilled water systems).
Experience with HASS (or similar program). Knowledge of Microsoft Project is a plus.
Ability to work well in a team environment and as an individual. Communicates well with individuals in the organization.
Capable of interpreting information set forth in a Scope of Work, Basis of Design, field surveys and code research.
Project involvement: Engineer of record from concept phase, through construction documents and construction administration.
Directs and mentors subordinate staff, where applicable, of their responsibilities on a daily basis.
The FPE is an Engineering Designer:
Experience with hydraulic calculations, fire pump sizing, fire alarm battery sizing.
Designs layout of distribution systems and equipment locations in coordination with team members within the discipline, as well as project team members in other disciplines.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program and minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
