Job Summary: The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, advanced diagnostics, and complex repairs on a diverse fleet of heavy-duty diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and complex machinery. This role requires a high degree of technical expertise and the ability to work independently to troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve critical mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum efficiency for fleet operations. Job Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to): * Efficiently perform machinery maintenance and repairs in the field and or shop. Majority of the Fleet is John Deere * Diagnoses and repairs various construction equipment and on-highway utility trucks and trailers using basic and specialty test equipment either mechanical or electronic * Troubleshoots and replaces various components such as valves, hoses, fittings, tanks, pumps etc. in hydraulic systems * Troubleshoots and repairs complex wiring for systems such as utility booms, chassis, and engine wiring. Must be able to read and understand wiring schematics * Performs basic fabrication and welding using MIG, ARC, OXY Acetylene, Torch, grinders, and other fabricating tools * Performs preventative maintenance and DOT/FMCSA inspections including wet and dry PM services and repairs that need to be addressed during inspection findings * Raises trucks, trailers or other equipment using hydraulic or air assisted jacks or hoists in a safe practice * Replaces worn or defective brake components including tire replacement * Diagnoses and repairs air conditioning systems. (The company provides A/C machine and test equipment) * Completes and submits all paperwork in an accurate and timely fashion * Ensure compliance with safety standards and company policies * Performs other duties as assigned. Required Skills & Qualifications: * High school or equivalent diploma/GED and minimum 5 years' experience in this specific role or in fields relating to medium/heavy duty truck repair, construction equipment repair, utility equipment repair or similar. * Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English, Bi-lingual Spanish is a plus. * Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred. * Candidate must be able to work independently, have good critical thinking / problem solving skills, follow directions, and be self-motivating. * Candidate must be a good representative of our company and perform their duties in an honest, ethical, and diligent manner. * Available / willing to work overtime as needed. Hours to be flexible and may include 1 weekend workday, to be discussed further. * Knowledge and experience with diesel engines * Must have basic computer skills and be organized. * Must furnish own tools and work boots. If you applied previously, you must apply again to be considered.What You'll Do:This position works under general supervision and requires considerable knowledge of auto mechanics:• Repairs and replaces major parts of systems on vehicles and equipment• Performs preventive maintenance and service (e.g., tunes gas and/or diesel engines, inspects engines checking for leaks, worn or close components, fluid levels, belt and hose conditions and/or mounting, • Inspects underbody checking for leaks, loose or worn components in suspension, steering and/or drive train, • Inspects brakes looking for loose or worn components, proper adjustments and/or leaks, changes fluids, operates electronic system scope) on cars, trucks and equipment (e.g., mowers, tractors, graders, weed eaters, generators) • Repairs, rebuilds and/or replaces major parts (e.g., carburetor, alternator, water or fuel pump, clutches, brake systems, exhaust systems).• Performs minor repairs or miscellaneous mechanic work (e.g., inspects tires/wheels for damage, leaks or wear, cleans or replaces diesel injectors, adjusts valves, performs body repair work, replaces shocks, repairs or replaces hydraulic pumps or systems, installs snowplow blades, repairs hydraulic systems).• Maintains records of repairs and maintenance• Orders and/or picks up parts• Provides service and repair of vehicles and equipment on emergency basis and/or makes onsite service/outpost calls• Operates welding equipment in order to repair vehicles and/or equipment (e.g., snowplow blades, frames, dump and flatbed truck bodies and/or related equipment)• Mows grass and/or operates snowplow, tow truck or other equipment• Pumps gasoline attends training schools and annual training• Serves on committees and attends meetings Why Work for the State of OhioAt the State of Ohio, we take care of the team that cares for Ohioans.
