Position Overview
The Childcare Teacher serves as a primary leader in the Chanikna Program, by providing quality care and education to infants, toddlers, and preschool aged children with the goal of increasing social competence, school readiness, and knowledge and pride in traditional Alaska Native culture and heritage. This position requires a person to ensure a healthy, safe environment while supervising simultaneous activities.
Schedule
35 hours per week generally worked as 7-hour work days Monday through Friday. Variances occasionally for coverage, opening/closing duties, and/or meetings with parents or admin time. Admin time is provided as 6-7 hours per week, which may be scheduled flexibly to best meet the needs of the classroom. There may be needs for increased admin time annually in preparation for enrollment packets and parent meetings.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides the primary leadership role for planning and implementation of age and culturally appropriate activities, custodial care, and supervision of children.
Utilizes a variety of appropriate industry approved strategies to meet educational and developmental goals and the physical, emotional, social, cultural, cognitive and language needs of enrolled children.

Purpose: Assists the LeadTeacher in all facets of center activities, carrying out lesson plans, conducting family visits and parent-teacher conferences, incorporating education, disability, health, mental health, family and attendance component plans, completing screenings, assessment and reports, and leading large and small groups of children.
Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
• Develop and maintain a positive relationship with the children, their families, staff, and volunteers.
• Assist in preparation of materials as needed to carry out the weekly lesson plans.
• Will eat and interact with children at mealtimes, serving as an appropriate model to the children.
• Provide support in all areas of the classroom maintaining a welcoming and cheerful environment; may assist conducting developmental screenings, observations of children's behavior, and in developing Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for each child, including evaluations.

Job Summary
Preschool teachers create a flexible and supportive education program and class environment favorable to learning and personal growth. The teacher provides instruction at an appropriate grade level while establishing an effective rapport with students as well as parents and staff members. In accordance with each student's ability, teachers motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good educational foundation. The teacher reports to and is evaluated by the site principal.
This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. This position's grade level, content area taught, and work site may change dependent upon student enrollment and district staffing needs. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the AlaskaTeachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.
