What Does A Lead Warehouse Associate Do At Johnstone Supply-B & F

* The Lead Warehouse Associate will be responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of one or more assigned warehouse functions, including receiving, put-away, replenishment, picking orders, loading trucks for customer and branch deliveries.
* Oversees all aspects of assigned warehouse functions, as defined below, by monitoring, assigning and directing staff to meet workload demands in a timely, accurate and efficient manner, and by ensuring that all standard operating procedures are being followed.
* Lead Receiving functions include:
* Ensures that all incoming product shipments are quickly and accurately received, processed and stored.
* Confirms shipments are inspected and damages/shortages noted on trucking company delivery document.
* Initiates freight claim procedure when needed.
* Promptly reports any discrepancies to supervisors.
* Assists with accurate placement of incoming products through vendor part number verification and bin number location.
* Lead Shipping functions include:
* Ensures that customer orders are picked quickly and accurately as needed by Counter Sales.
* Makes sure delivery vehicles are properly loaded and assists customers with will call pickups.
* Directs the preparation, packing, scanning and staging of products for inter-store transfer and customer pick-up and delivery in accordance with established standards (e.g. hazardous materials).
* Ensures that packaging is sufficient to avoid damage.
* Reviews documentation necessary to ship inter-store transfers and customer orders, including bills of lading, packing lists, small parcel manifests and other necessary documents.
* General Warehouse functions:
* Performs periodic cycle counting on assigned items in order to keep accurate records of inventory.
* Verifies actual counts of stock against computerized records.
* Investigates and reports discrepancies.
* As needed, may assist in the loading, unloading, picking, packing, receiving and handling of products using a forklift or other material handling equipment.

Material recording clerks usually need to have a high school diploma and are trained on the job. There are no formal education requirements for stock clerks and order fillers.


Production, planning, and expediting clerks; shipping, receiving, and traffic clerks; and material and product inspecting clerks need a high school diploma or equivalent.

Production, planning, and expediting clerks need to have basic knowledge of computer applications such as spreadsheet software.

Material recording clerks usually learn to do their work on the job. Training for most material recording clerks may last less than a month. Production, planning, and expediting clerks’ training can take several months.

Typically, a supervisor or more experienced worker trains new clerks.

Material recording clerks first learn to count stock and mark inventory and then move onto more difficult tasks, such as recordkeeping. Production clerks need to learn how their company operates before they can write production and work schedules.


With additional training or education, material recording clerks may advance to other positions within their firm, such as purchasing agent. Clerks in retail establishments can move into the sales department.

Important Qualities

Communication skills. Production, planning, and expediting clerks are frequently in contact with suppliers, vendors, and production managers and need to be able to communicate the firm’s scheduling needs effectively.
